I sometimes feel guilty for impacting the world supply of this tiny production Champagne with my greedy consumption... But never while I am drinking it. The Cepages D'Antan is made from one press load of the near-extinct champagne varietals Arbanne, Meslier and Pinot Blanc, and yields only about 3,000 bottles per harvest. Nothing is more electric, satisfying and complete than this exotic beauty. With more than eight years of ageing on the lees and the fantastic verve and acidity of Arbanne and Meslier, this is super complete champagne. This is the perfect gift for the Champagne lover who has "had it all"... If I leave any behind for them and you can resist drinking it yourself!

The prestige bottling, and a fascinating one—a co-planted, co-pressed, co-fermented field blend from a single vineyard. The result is a wine of striking energy: intense citrus, orchard fruit, toasted grain, and a deep, savory minerality. The palate is high-toned and bright, tightly structured, with laser-cut acidity and remarkable length. Ambitious, distinctive grower Champagne for the serious collector.

This is not your typical Champagne, and the care behind the winemaking shows in every sip. Even the name hints at its story, loosely translating to “a blend of historic varieties.” While most classic Champagnes revolve around three main varieties, this cuvée takes a different path with approximately 40% Petit Meslier, 40% Arbanne, and 20% Pinot Blanc. The grapes are harvested later in the season and co-fermented, two choices that set it apart and give the wine its layered complexity. What comes through in the glass is something both bright and textured. There are fresh citrus notes, sweet apple, and a smooth creaminess that keeps everything balanced. The lees influence is present, adding depth and character without overpowering the palate. If you think you’ve already experienced everything Champagne has to offer, this bottle is a reminder that there’s still plenty left to discover. It feels fresh, distinctive, and thoughtfully made- exactly the kind of wine that grabs your attention and keeps it.

Wow! I can honestly say that I have never tried a Champagne like this before! I first had it at one of our Champagne Tent Events in Redwood City (early 2000's!). A very exotic blend of Pinot Blanc, Petit Meslier and Arbanne. These varietals were more common 150 years ago. It has white fruits such as pear, lychee and white nectarine. Add toasted pine nuts, almond, lime skin, green apples, some chalk and there you have it. One of the most interesting Champagnes in the company! After all these years, this beauty continues to hold my interest and admiration. If you are obsessed with Champagne and want to taste a historical bottle, here it is. So unique and sooooo delicious!

Notes

This super rare bottling is made with some of the nearly extinct, native grape varieties of Champagne. It is composed of 40% Petit Meslier, 40% Arbanne, and 20% Pinot Blanc. I think it is the best of the excellent Ariston portfolio. The nose has only hints of exoticism; the overall impression is of rich cream and toast, but underneath is a hint of pine and exotic white fruit from the old varieties. On the palate the Champagne makes for a double take: it is very rich and textural, but finishes with a laser beam of chalky acidity that just goes on and on. It is fantastic first-course Champagne, and pairs well with a wide variety of foods. We tried it with both foie and oysters to equal delight! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
