As is often the case, the blend is better (although not by much) than either of the individual components. It offers greater complexity both aromatically and on the palate, opulence, great fruit expression, and superb aging potential. (JM) 97+

This blend from the Nicasia and Adrianna vineyards is the best Malbec on the market today. There's raisin, mineral, licorice, blackberry and more. The mouth is like a Mack truck on ice skates, meaning it's both huge and elegant. And the mile-long finish of coffee, mocha and molten black fruit is awesome. (MS)

Ambitious, with lots of muscular, very toasty fig, blueberry, black currant and boysenberry flavors wound together by bittersweet cocoa and fruitcake notes. The long, powerful finish will need some time to stretch out fully. (JM)

Knockout nose offers cassis, mocha and clove, along with a strong suggestion of soil tones. Projects an uncanny combination of density and sweetness on the one hand and penetration on the other, with gripping, lightly saline flavors of dark berries, tobacco, spices and minerals. A wonderfully tactile wine with substantial broad tannins and a palate-staining finish dominated by sweet black and blue fruits. (ST)

Notes

Catena Zapata was founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena. and today is one of Argentina’s most influential wineries. Its Argentino Malbec stands as a powerful expression of the country’s viticultural identity. Sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Mendoza, the wine highlights the depth and elegance Malbec can achieve through old vines, low yields, and precise vineyard selection, offering layers of dark fruit, violets, spice, and a finely structured palate. The label itself is iconic, featuring a classical, almost mythological design inspired by ancient civilizations and the idea of Malbec as Argentina’s noble grape, with a central female figure symbolizing the spirit and rebirth of the variety in the New World.
