2007 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese Nahe
97
John Gilman
Review Date: 04/2008The 2007 Hermannshöhle Spätlese is utterly classic in its aromatic and flavor profile, and it too is destined to be a monumental example of the vintage. The bouquet offers up a reserved and stunning blend of grapefruit, petrol, layer upon layer of slate, white grape and iris blossoms. On the palate the wine is medium-full, crisp and complex (mostly from nuances of slate today), with stunning mid-palate depth, laser-like focus, snappy acids and an utterly profound, racy and endless finish. Today this wine is coiled and will need several years in the cellar to open, but already its brilliant quality is very easy to read. Could this be even better than the Brücke Spätlese when all is said and done? (Drink between 2014-2045)

Notes
According to importer Terry Theise: "Again the mineral is like a rock-slide, the fruit is exquisite, the acidity is penetrating and the nuances are so many and hyperactive you feel as though a terroir fibrillator were shocking your palate. Almost always the most explicit and kinetic of Helmut’s wines, yet when it outgrows its puppy-energy it becomes as charged with serenity as they all do."
