Cachet Or 1er Cru White) An attractively yeasty nose combines notes of apple, pear, acacia blossom and a hint of apricot. There is fine complexity to the utterly delicious flavors that possess reasonably good concentration, indeed sufficiently so that there is a sappy, even creamy texture to the mid-palate that carries over to the lingering finish. This will not wow you with its refinement as the mousse is not especially fine yet it's rare to find this kind of depth anywhere close to this price point. Thus, as a candidate for an everyday sipper, this is highly recommended. (AM)

Lassalle's NV Brut Premier Cachet d'Or is a good introduction to the house style. Lemon, flowers and savory herbs are all nicely articulated in the glass. I especially like the energy and sense of vibrancy here. (AG)

Fans of Pinot Meunier or anyone looking for a zippy crowd-pleasing party Champagne is going to want to take heed. The nose is shy with subtle notes of cherry but surprisingly supported by a fresh jolt of bright acidity and the hallmark flavor of pomegranate. Super fun pick, and the price is right!

What a lively, historic Premier Cru grower-producer Champagne! A classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier, the J. Lassalle "Cachet Or" is still made using a traditional wooden press, and aged three years on the lees! A lot of work goes into this tiny production (farmed from just 16 hectares on clay and limestone soil in Chigny-Les-Roses), which features three generations of women at the helm. This release sings with tangerine and orchard fruit, tempered by a slightly herbaceous, almost camphor, nose and a chalky finish. There is subtle toastiness from the lees, but mostly this is easygoing, bright Champagne – my notes literally read “crushable.” I can’t wait to enjoy a bottle al fresco as summer heat gives way to fall.

Notes

J. Lassalle works with 11 hectares of vineyards in Champagne, all of them of Premier Cru status. This non-vintage brut is grown in Chigny-les-Rose and composed of 60% Meunier, 20% Pinot Noir, and 20% Chardonnay.
