The 1999 Clos des Goisses flows from the glass with the essence of minerals, chalk, smoke, ash, white peaches, pears, flowers and sweet oak. This is a muscular, powerful wine that needs serious bottle age to come around, yet it possesses striking clarity and detail in its aromatics and flavors. Clos des Goisses is one of the most rewarding wines to drink when mature, and I have no doubt this will be another splendid version. This refined, sumptuous wine is not to be missed. Clos des Goisses is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and 30% of the wine was fermented in oak. (AG)

Explosive bouquet of musky yellow fruits, cherry pit, toasted grain and minerals; there's something Jura-like about this. Deep, palate-staining mirabelle, peach pit and poached pear flavors are complicated by anise and bitter cherry skin, showing excellent grip. Finishes long and spicy, with excellent breadth. Remarkably complex and singular Champagne, with as much character as any wine I've tried in a long time, from anywhere. (JR)

A wonderfully delicate and pure nose that is understated yet superbly classy with discreet yeast and green apple notes where the aromas are beginning to reveal only the initial hints of maturity and are followed by complex and equally understated flavors that are an exercise in finesse and balance. A 'Zen' Clos des Goisses and one that should age for a very long time in this format.

Philipponnat’s 1999 Clos des Goisses is a brilliant wine in the making, but it is still very, very young and has some SO2 to work through before it will really be ready for primetime drinking. The superb bouquet is a youthful and vibrant blend of grapefruit, white currant, kaleidoscopic minerality, brioche, gentle smokiness and orange zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a rock solid core of fruit, utterly refined mousse, brisk acids, laser-like focus and stunning mineral drive on the very, very long and snappy finish. This is a great wine in the making, but I would not consider opening a bottle of the ’99 Clos des Goisses for at least another four or five years. It is not that the wine is not drinkable at this early stage, but to open bottles now is to waste precious magic in the future! A great wine in the making, but exercise a bit of patience. 94+

This sparkler is one that will cellar for more than 25 years, for those of you who collect and age your Champagnes. Philipponat has owned this vineyard (located in Mareuil-sur-Ay) since 1935. It is the original single-vineyard Champagne and is regarded as one of finest vineyards in the entire region. It has an intense nose of dried cherries, minerals and honeysuckle. In the mouth, the dominant fruit is of rich pears with cherries and peaches. There is also a leesy quality that lends complexity to the mix and very spicy finish that gives an idea of what is to become of this Champagne with years of cellaring. There are many Champagnes available that cost $100 or more per bottle that are not nearly as good as this!

Notes

According to the San Francisco Chronicle: "The oldest, and still the greatest [site-specific Champagne] is Philipponnat's Clos de Goisses, from a steep, south-facing vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ considered to be one of the finest sites in the entire region. Champagne house Philippnnat has owned this vineyard since 1935, and it has always been bottled separately as a vintage-dated, single-vineyard Champange...The original single-vineyard Champange, Clos des Goisses, is an intense, complex wine of aristocratic refinement and legendary longevity, needing 25 years or more to attain maturity." 92 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s Clos des Goisses dinner. Disgorged February 2008, 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay with 30% matured in oak cask, the ’99 Clos des Goisses has opened up on the nose since I last tasted it, with limestone, granite, smoke, walnut and a touch of brioche. Very good definition. The palate is taut with citric acidity: very focused with notes of green apple, orange peel, apricot and quince jus, then motes of honey. Racy towards the finish and as before, mellowing nicely with aeration in the glass." (03/2010)
