One of the most iconic Trappist beers, this pours a gorgeous golden-orange color, with a large, frothy off-white head that lingers. Bottled with brettanomyces, you can immediately pick up on the wonderfully complex, dry, funky earth and barnyard notes, with additional aromas of orange peel, green apple, gingered white tea, yeasty spice and freshly baked bread. The medium-bodied mouthfeel boasts bright, fizzy carbonation and refreshing acidity, making the palate seem light and approachable. It finishes dry and spicy, with flavors of citrus pith, lemongrass, white pepper and farm hay. It's delicious upon release, but additional time in the cellar will allow this to harmonize, mellow and mature into an even more complex and nuanced brew; try after 3 years from release (refer to product label). *No. 6 of the top 25 beers of 2015* (LB)

Fans of pungent farmhouse styles will love the full-bodied complexity of this rustic unfiltered pale ale. A truly authentic Trappist ale, Orval is pitched with Brettanomyces yeast before allowing the flavor to bloom over a long cellar conditioning period. As this beer is stored over months to years, the lively green aroma of the hops and zesty citrus notes give way to the remarkably complex and soulful mushroom character that it is known for.

This is one of my favorite beers in the world. The fermentation process is rather unique. Wild yeast is introduced and fermentation takes place in the bottle. This beer is evolving with each passing day. It's full of spice notes with a tiny bit of funk. It will pickup sour nuances as it ages.

As a young wine professional I often yearned for a complex drink when I didn't have the money to afford it. At times like that, I always turned to Orval, a beer that provides an experience akin to 1er Cru Burgundy, but at a price that I could easily afford even when rent was due. Somehow the monks manage to combine great lift, refreshment and ease of drinking with serious layers of savory complexity. The look of the stuff in the glass is worth the price of admission on its own... The Belgian lace this ale throws always takes longer than I want to wait to come down in the glass low enough for me to have a sip!

Notes

This Belgian Trappist ale is from the Abbey of Orval in the province of Luxembourg. Brettanomyces gives this dry sipper lovely complexity. Sensory notes from the brewery: "Sunset-orange color; a fruity and slightly acidic bouquet, firm body, profound hop bitterness, and long, dry finish." ABV: 6.9%, OG: 1.055, IBU: 32.
