A superprecise, reductive style due to bright lime-peel aromas enhanced by chalky minerality with linden tree and yellow plums. Light-bodied, it has zesty acidity with pinprick bubbles, a tight-knit structure and a chewy yet very polished finish. Mineral-laden aftertaste. Drink or hold.

Currently offers a lot of complexity from lees-ageing and reserve wines for the price, making it an excellent buy. There's a sophisticated, complex note of baked citrus, sourdough bread and fresh nuts over precise stone-fruit Pinot Noir, backed up with plenty of zesty Chardonnay. Layered, persistent and fine, it's a model non-vintage. (TH)

A minerally underpinning of oyster shell, chalk and smoke accents is layered with rich flavors of creamed black cherry, brioche and lemon curd in this bright, balanced Champagne, with a lacy mousse. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. (AN)

The house of Henriot is one of the last of the big name negociants to stay independent, and that independence has allowed them to focus on quality in the bottle. This Champagne is composed of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 25 crus within the region, many from their own 87 acre estate. The Souverain has a lovely toasty quality that is nicely balanced by a refreshing zing. It is a perfect aperitif!

Amazingly bright and moussey. Pure golden honey in color, and clean yet luxurious minerality on the palate. Boy would this pair well with sushi! This is an uber value and a superbly elegant classic style of Champagne!

Beautiful toast aromatics on the nose open up to amazingly fresh green apples and quince on the palate. How a grand marque can make such an elegant cuvee at this amazing a price is truly impressive!

Notes

Henriot's vineyard has been around since the 1700s, but they didn't begin producing bubbly until 1808. Composed of 50% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Meunier, the Souverain Brut tends toward a lighter, more crisp style with decent acidity and flavors of green apples, pears, limes, nectarines, and a light bit of minerality. It also has some cream and vanilla on the finish. More than 25 cru wines from the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs make up the final blend, with 30% being reserve wines. Each bottle is aged for more than 3 years in their cellars in Reims. Current dosage is less than 8g/l. Two-thirds of the final blend are Grand Cru and Premier Cru grapes.
