Reviewed March 2009Medium+ lemon-straw colour. There's a touch more vibrancy here on the nose than with the 1985, beginning with an abundance of toasty /yeasty notes and leading to complex suggestions of ginger-nut biscuit, marzipan, lemongrass and a whiff of chalkboards. Elegantly styled providing a fair amount of bubbles while the palate gives crisp acidity that compliments the remaining citrus nuances. The finish is long leaving pleasantly lingering savoury/meaty hints and plenty of chalky minerality. (LPB)

All of the qualities found in the original release are amped up in the 1976 Dom Pérignon Œnothèque (Disgorged 2003). Unctuous and deep the 1976 Œno is a real powerhouse, but all of that intensity is nicely countered by the wine’s brightness and energy. This is another stellar release in the Œnothèque (P2) series. The late-disgorged 1976 Dom Pérignon is a very pretty and classy bottle that is now fully into its apogee of maturity and drinking well. The bouquet offers up a mature and vibrant mélange of brioche, pear, caramelized apple, chalky soil tones, delicate notes of nuttiness and just a hint of toasted marshmallow that I often fine in older DPs from hot vintages. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, fresh and complex, with lovely cut and bounce, excellent mid-palate depth, fine mousse and excellent length and grip on the complex and classy finish. There remains here on the palate just a touch of the youthful herbal streak of Dom Perignon, which may indicate that even further elegance will emerge with further bottle age, though the slight touch of marshmallow makes me wonder if it might not be better to drink this wine up in regular-sized format over the next several years, rather than hold it in the cellar and wait for a bit more polish. Good juice. Drink between 2008-2020.
Notes
This is a late-disgorged bottle direct from the cellars of Moet in Epernay. The 1976 was thought of as a watershed by many in Champagne, as it was the last great vintage before the commercial clones came online. It was also one of the warmest harvests of the 20th century, and forced many vignerons to cut short their vacations and return to harvest. This is a very special and rare bottle--we only have six!
