2002 Franciscan "Magnificat - Estate" Oakville Meritage
CG
Connoisseurs Guide
Review Date: 04/2006Plump and plummy with a ready dose of slightly smoky oak spice and glints of briar showing in both its aromas and very ripe flavors, this bottling begins with winning richness and fruit but sputters a bit and becomes abrasively tannic and dry at the finish.

The 2002 Magnificat, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, reveals additional tannin, force, power, depth, and exuberance. It should age well for a decade. (RP)

The initial aromas of ripe, grapey currant, leather and mineral turn earthier and drier on the palate, ending with a stronger leather presence competing with the anise and dusty notes. Best to decant. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2009. 22,268 cases made. (JL)
