Ruinart is a specialist in Blanc de Blancs Champagne. This wine is finely balanced between maturity and taut fresh, mineral-driven fruit. From the Côte des Blancs, the wine is poised and ready to drink. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

The current release of Dom Ruinart’s non-vintage Blanc de Blancs is from the base year of 2019. It was disgorged in November of 2022, after two and a half years aging sur latte and finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter. The bouquet is bright and expressive, offering up scents of lemon, pear, a lovely base of chalky minerality, bread dough and a topnote of white lilies. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and complex, with a lovely core, good soil undertow, elegant mousse and a long, well-balanced and impressively complex finish. This is drinking very nicely already, but seems likely to be even more tasty a year or two down the road, for those inclined to cellar non-vintage bubbly.

Classic and springy, with a pastoral, fresh feel and a bright pale straw hue, the NV Champagne Blanc De Blancs Brut is the calling card for the house. This release is based on the 2020 vintage, with some reserves from 2019 and 2018, all raised in stainless steel tank and lifted with 7 grams per liter dosage. Opening to floral aromas as well as a note of salted white grapefruit and a hint of soft, chalky earth, it offers a fluffy mousse and a juicy palate, with notes of candied apple in a medium-bodied frame. A sleek and refreshing Champagne with an approachable kiss of sweet, ripe fruit, it’s going to hold up over the coming years, but I would prefer to enjoy it young to preserve its freshness. (AF)

A refreshing, mineral-driven Champagne, with a lacy mousse. Offers flavors of crunchy pear, peach skin and acacia blossoms, plus a fragrant skein of graphite, anise and ginger that lingers on the smoke-tinged finish. (AN)

The Ruinart Brut Blanc De Blancs is a wonderfully different style of Chardonnay based Champagne than any other that we have. While almost all of the others that we carry rely on the laser precision of Cote de Blanc fruit exclusively, this wine balances this electricity with the rich, nearly grapey Chardonnay of the Mountain of Reims. The result is magic; a full bodied blanc de blancs that still finishes dry and long! These crus; Trepail and Villers Marmery on the Mountain of Reims round out the mineraly focus of the Cotes de Blancs fruit. This is a creamy, subtly toasty bottle of Champagne with a little bit of lychee exoticism. It has class to spare and is exceptionally easy to drink.

Ruinart’s flagship wine is built in a style that emphasizes a very crisp, clean, and elegant Champagne experience. Made in a reductive style so that the high quality Premier Cru juice sees very little oxygen during vinification, the clean flavors of citrus and stone fruits dominate against a backdrop of pronounced minerality and crisp acid. If your looking to impress company, no matter how discerning the palates, pick this up.

Broad and decadent the Blanc des Blancs from Ruinart is chock full of summer ripe peaches and poached pears. Floral and opulent nose, white flowers and gala apple float out of the glass. Continuing with gingersnaps and Crème brûlée, on the palate that is weighty and lush. This wine finishes with a vein of chalk and honey crisp apple to complete the picture on a lovely bottle of bubbles.

Notes

Ruinart is one of Champagne's oldest houses, founded by Nicholas Ruinart in 1729, himself a descendent of Dom Thierry Ruinart, the other "Dom" responsible for so much of the early viticultural progress of the appellation. Only Gosset is older, but apparently Ruinart was first to base his business on sparkling, rather than still Champagne. This Blanc de Blancs is made exclusively from Grand and Premier Cru Chardonnay, much of which is estate fruit from the biggest land-holder in all of Champagne: Ruinart's parent company LVMH. The feature that sets this stainless steel-fermented wine apart from other Blanc de Blancs is the combination of grapes from both the Côtes de Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, giving it a more rounded style. I find some chalky minerality in this Champagne, but also lychee fruit and texture. It seems sweeter than the claimed dosage of 8 grams per liter. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
