Velvety, perfumed and sumptuous, this new single-vineyard release is remarkably lithe given its 15.5% alcohol. The vinous equivalent of Wagyu beef, the Douro Superior grapes were gently foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares. Aged in top-notch oak barrels and vats, fine-grained tannins meld seamlessly with sweet-scented, bergamot and orange peel-edged crushed raspberry, mulberry and blackberry fruit. Savoury undertones of tapenade and a suggestion of mint lend nuance. Ultra-confident. (SA)

The 2019 Tinto Quinta de Ervamoira is a field blend aged for 18 months in one-third new French oak (about one-third overall in large vats). It comes in at 15.6% alcohol. A harder wine than the Duas Quintas Reserva, this doesn't seem to handle its power quite as well, but it doesn't go fully off the rails either. On the good news side of the ledger, it projects lots of flavor and has precision on the long finish. If I wasn't quite sure the Duas Quintas Reserva was going to work in the long haul, I am probably even less sure here. Yet at the same time, it often seems spectacular and delicious. I predict this will work out, but give it a couple of years in the cellar. It certainly needs to answer some questions in the cellar. I would rather be especially cautious just now. (MS)

The voluptuous richness implied in the scent is there in the flavor of this Tawny, as it turns up the volume on notes of peach pit, pine nuts and cream. Layered, complex and satisfying, this ends on toasty warmth and supple generosity.

This floral wine has generous black fruits combined with tannins and acidity. It maybe misses the power of some wines in this vintage, giving instead a fruity, blackberry-flavored take on the year. (RV)

Email GaryA single-vineyard Port is an elegant way to finish any meal, and since this particular wine has already been aged 10 years in barrel, it is ready to go. One needn't worry about if suffering from oxidation either, after 10 years of slow exposure in oak, a few months re-corked in your cellar or liquor cabinet will not hurt it. This has more vintage-like power and full black fruit than your average 10 year tawny, and goes very well with cobblers and pies as well as the more traditional match with cheese.
