Drunk from a bottle that was disgorged in 2016, the 1995 Blanc des Millenaires continues to show very well, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of waxy citrus rind, dried pear, walnut oil, warm bread and fresh pastry. On the palate, it's full-bodied, enveloping and chalky, with a rich and muscular core, lively acids and a long, precise finish. Impeccably balanced, this is a cuvée I have drunk on many occasions and which used to be well-represented in my own cellar, but this is as good a bottle as I have ever encountered. (WK)

The last batch of 1995 was disgorged in summer 2017, after spending 21 years on lees. ‘Jetted’ to revive it after disgorgement, it has a new lease of life. A refreshing young Champagne with pure chalkiness and lemon intensity. Cries out for oysters. (CG)

The 1995 Brut Blanc des Millenaires shows just how compelling this often overlooked vintage can be. Layers of lemon, pastry spices, crushed rocks and savory herbs literally jump from the glass in this exquisite, perfumed, beautifully delineated Champagne. The 1995 shows lovely flavor complexity and nuance from its extended time in bottle, yet it also retains plenty of freshness, verve and acidity. This is a great showing from Charles Heidsieck. The 1995 was made before the tenure of the house's current team, headed by CEO Cécile Bonnefond. It will be very interesting to see what develops at this historic property over the coming years. This mouthwatering Champagne is refined and satiny in texture, with a citrusy overtone to the flavors of apricot preserves, toasted hazelnut and brioche, crystallized honey and fleur de sel. Presents a lasting, smoke- and spice-filled finish. *Highly Recommended* (AN)

The Blanc de Millenaires from Charles Heidsieck is not only a masterpiece of craft, but also of patience. To say that this Blanc de Blancs is made rarely is an understatement, it has only been made four more times since the original release in 1983! It is composed from the fruit of five cotes des blancs villages; Avize, Oger, Cramant, Mesnil and Vertus, and then aged for decades in the pure chalk crayeres of Charles Heidsieck, 90 feet below Reims. The results are spectacular, with toasted brioche aromas and flavors as well as fabulous freshness and minerality.

Nothing makes my eyes widen and mouth water more than a bottle of this gem about to be opened. It has rich toasty aromas that surround a beautifully taut core of green apples and citrus meringue, with added notes of hazelnuts and smoke. The aging process has imparted perfect integration and balance, and the acidity has preserved the wine from any signs of tiredness. This is the kind of Champagne I could waste an entire evening simply smelling. On the palate the acid is still vibrant and vivacious, and the mineral texture is a marvel unto itself. This is an experience well worth the price of admission.

The Blanc des Millenaires is really something special because Heidsieck so rarely makes it, even in years considered great vintages for the Champagne region. I love the smoke right off the bat on this! There are scents of fresh-baked brioche bread, soft orchard fruits, along with some savory and salty notes. The palate is a delightful contradiction with chalk-in-your-teeth minerality, gentle oak spices, and buttery cooked apples.

Notes

This spectacular bottle of Champagne is drinking better than any current release tête de cuvée in the store thanks to the patience of the folks at Charles Heidsieck. The supply is running out however, so if you want some of this great 1995 before it is gone, act quickly. This wine is all Chardonnay from the villages of Cramant, Oger, Mesnil and Vertus and has the butterscotch laced toastiness of Champagne that has been given the time that it needs to develop. The classy Cote des Blancs minerality balances out the richness perfectly, leaving the drinker refreshed and eager for more. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)
