The Wine Independent

A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and 3% Merlot, the 2002 Dominus has a deep garnet color, with a slight hint of brick. It is a little closed and broody to begin, needing some convincing to encourage notes of tar, black truffles, tobacco leaf, and cast-iron pan, leading to a core of plum pudding, blackberry preserves, and blackcurrant jam, plus a waft of charcuterie. The full-bodied palate is packed with youthful blackberry preserves and earthy layers, supported by fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering meaty/savory note. So youthful - it still has many years ahead of it! (LPB)

This 2002 was virtually perfect when I tasted it in early May. Even better than I predicted seven years ago, this 4,500-case blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot and Merlot has blossomed beautifully, revealing even greater intensity and potential than I predicted. A flawless, seamless integration of tannin, wood, alcohol and acidity is found in this dense, plum/purple-colored Dominus, along with copious notes of sweet black currants interwoven with kirsch, forest floor, unsmoked cigar tobacco, new saddle leather and forest floor. Full-bodied with velvety tannins, stunning elegance and a 45-second finish, this sensational 2002 rivals two of the all-time great wines made at Dominus, 1991 and 1994. It is hard to believe that proprietor Christian Moueix’s Dominus Estate has already celebrated its 25th anniversary and is moving toward 30 years with the 2012-2013 vintages. (RP)

The 2002 Dominus offers a striking interplay of the earthy/savory character typical of this site with the natural breadth of the vintage. The combination is super attractive, to say the least. Succulent red cherry, plum, five-spice, cedar, leather and tobacco all build as the 2002 shows off its sumptuous personality. A long, beautifully resonant finish caps off this stunning Dominus. The 2002 is a gorgeous Napa Valley Cabernet to drink over the next decade or more. It's a fabulous effort from Christian Moueix and winemaker Boris Champy. (NM)

Int'l Wine Review

Review Date: 06/2009
Still well in it's youth the 2002 Dominus brings bright aromas of ripe currants, coffee beans, dried tobacco, graphite along with pretty floral notes. This is elegant and refined with an ultra-long, flavorful finish. Very solid, but give it time. (JD) 95+

Notes

93 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted blind at St. John restaurant, this bottle showed better than before, mainly because there was less indication of dryness towards the finish here. It maintains that alluring minerally nose with hints of eucalyptus, spice box and dark cherries. The palate remains beautifully balanced, more feminine than the 1996 Dominus, notes of damson and Xmas cake inflecting the black fruits, the finish stronger than three years ago and more reminiscent of Bordeaux than I was anticipating. Great wine." (11/2009)
