1958 La Pointe, Pomerol
Notes
Fantastic, truffle-scented mature Bordeaux, a perfect birthday bottle that will not break the bank! The estate once belonged to the old, respected Chaperon family of Libourne in the early 19th century. They were responsible for building the elegant Directoire-style château. The class and charm of the estate explains why La Pointe was historically qualified with the much envied name of "château", which was once attributed to just two Pomerol estates. The chateau's surface area at the time (21 hectares) was almost identical to its present size, as confirmed by legal documents dating back to 1845. Château La Pointe's real rise to fame dates from the end of the Second Empire. In the 1868 edition of Charles Cocks' seminal "Bordeaux et ses vins," Edouard Féret lists La Pointe as among the finest growths in Pomerol and goes on to say that the wines "are noteworthy for their finesse, bouquet and beautiful colour."
