2001 Finca Allende "Calvario" Rioja

Review Date: 06/2005Yet another portly, gorgeous wine from Allende, one that well serves the single-vineyard train of thought. Entirely international in style, with pure plum, blackberry and vanilla aromas and flavors. Super concentrated and unctuous, with soft tannins and an all-out finish. And the acidity is as integrated and proper as possible.

Good deep ruby. Inky aromas of cassis and bitter chocolate, with a suggestion of baked fruits. Thick, dense and hugely concentrated, with a saline quality. As creamy, unctuous and superripe as this is, it's also lively and sharply delineated. A massive, seamless Rioja that finishes with huge, ripe, touthcoating tannins. Definitely not your father's Rioja. (from a single vineyard planted in 1945)

A powerhouse. It has an inky color, roasted aromas of espresso and tobacco, and intense flavors of bitter chocolate, plum, prune and mineral supported by muscular tannins. Not typical, but has an intense character. Best from 2005 through 2012.

Scented. Burgundian. Very dense colour. Nicely savoury. Very sweet, then chewy.
