The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is flat out gorgeous. Silky and aromatic, the 2000 impresses with nuance and freshness. It is not a huge or powerful wine, instead what stands out is the wine's total sense of balance. Medium in body and supremely gracious, the 2000 has so much to offer. The cooler growing season yielded more of a mid-weight feeling of structure. (AG)

It had been a year since I last crossed paths with a bottle of the 2000 Philip Togni Cabernet, which readers will recall, was the first vintage where Lisa Togni returned to the winery full-time to work alongside of her father. This bottle was even a hair better than last year’s, as it offers up an outstanding nose of cassis, black cherries, cigar smoke, incipient notes of chipotle peppers, a fine, complex base of soil and a discreet base of bit of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and rock solid at the core, with the first signs of blossoming maturity starting to unfold, lovely focus and grip and still just as bit of backend, mountain cabernet tannins perking up the long and impressive finish. I love the Togni family’s cabernets!

Notes

Founded in 1981 by British-born winemaker Philip Togni, who studied under legendary enologist Emile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux and worked at Château Lascombes before coming to Napa Valley in 1959, Philip Togni Vineyard is perched at 2,000 feet elevation on Spring Mountain. Before establishing his own estate, Togni crafted wines for some of Napa's most prestigious wineries including Mayacamas, Chalone, Inglenook, and Chappellet, where he made the legendary 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon that received a perfect 100-point score and is considered one of California's greatest wines. Since joining the winery in the 2000s, Philip's daughter Lisa has taken over winemaking duties, continuing the family tradition of producing age-worthy, classically styled mountain Cabernet Sauvignons from their ten-acre organically farmed estate vineyard.
