Christophe Roumier’s Bonnes-Mares is a stellar wine in 1996. This is still a half a dozen years or so away from full opening, but it is not reserved today and is very easy to see where it is headed. The excellent bouquet delivers a complex constellation of red and black cherries, pigeon, woodsmoke, a very complex base of soil, rose petals and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, long and complex, with a nice touch of sappiness at the core, outstanding soil inflection, fine-grained tannins and a very, very long, tangy and classy finish. This is going to be brilliant when it is fully ready to drink!

Dark bright colour, very fresh. The nose is exceptionally backward. This was served in a mini-flight of the vintages 1996 to 1999 and seemed surly in comparison, showing concentration but not generosity. And then it starts to open…. An unexpected succulence emerges, a hint of savoury character behind, the firm acidity of the vintage and exceptional length. If you want joy from this wine rather than to appreciate its qualities intellectually, wait at least another five years.

Displaying a dark ruby color and a fabulous nose of candied red fruits and cookie dough, this wine is an immensely rich, multi-dimensional masterpiece. This broad-shouldered, ample, oily-textured, masculine, structured, and medium-to-full-bodied wine is formidably concentrated and complex. Highly-focused blackberries, violets, lilies, stones, earth, and cassis flavors are intermingled with grilled and spiced new oak. Its prodigiously long finish is expansive, rendering its copious and supple tannins invisible. (PR)

Christophe Roumier fashioned some seriously impressive '96s and this has finally begun to open on the spicy, pure, airy and elegant nose while displaying really lovely aromatic complexity that continues on the relatively round sappy and sweet flavors that unlike many '96s, possesses excellent acid/fruit/tannin balance on the gorgeously persistent finish. While one can discern some initial development, this is still a baby and will definitely be a long-distance runner so if you own it, additional patience is definitely required.
