2002 Shirvington Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia
99
Wine Advocate
Review Date: 08/2003The nearly perfect 2002 Shiraz is the stuff of legends. It is a 1,000 case cuvée that has been completely fermented and aged in 100% new American oak. An inky purple color is accompanied by a remarkable bouquet of white flowers intermixed with melted licorice, blackberries, currants, figs, and espresso roast. Extremely full-bodied, with extraordinary ripeness, opulence, and viscosity, yet very good acidity as well as excellent tannin providing up-lift and definition, this unforgettable wine can be drunk now or cellared for a decade or more. Bravo! (RP)

Notes
The 2002 vintage was long, cool and one of the best in recent history for McLaren Vale. Acidity was preserved and the grapes were able to develop slowly, promoting complexity and depth of flavor in the wine. This outstanding Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, still showing lots of youthful fruit and spicy complexity, but it has the stuffing to develop further in bottle for an additional 5-10 years.
