Reviewed October 2003A superb Champagne and still youthful. Honey, ginger, lemon confit, coffee and mineral aromas and flavors come to mind, all kept focused by a firm, tightly wound structure. The finish is where its pedigree shines through, lingering like warm gingerbread and coffee. (BS)

Vinous
The 1988 Krug makes for a fabulous start. Tasted from a perfect bottle, the 1988 remains bright and focused, with all of the energy of this great vintage very much on display. Time has naturally softened some of the contours and added a good bit of nuance, but the 1988 Krug remains a Champagne of crystalline precision. I loved it. (AG)

Tasted at a hotel in Zurich, this remains a stunning Krug. Deep and lucid in colour, it retains that show-stopping, honeyed bouquet with breathtaking definition, offering hints of cut lime, cooking apple, cold granite, citrus lemon and a hint of walnut. The palate is taut, driven by vibrant acidity, hints of passion fruit and white peach, but at its heart is that sense of precision and poise. The finish has a beguiling candied quality that flirts daringly and beckons another sip. Heavenly and perhaps starting to drink at its peak. (NM)

Int'l Wine Cellar
Ineffable yeast autolysis aromas (biscuit, meal, nuts) virtually resist characterization; reminded me of a great Chevalier-Montrachet. A wine of extraordinary depth of flavor, vinosity and class, thanks to penetrating but perfectly harmonious, lipsmacking acidity. Quite dry but with wonderfully ripe fruit. Very firm and youthful on the finish, but already displays explosive flavor. A great vintage for Krug. (ST) 96+

No great vintage from Champagne drinks as well as the 1988's do right now, and I think it is safe to say that this vintage is even better than the flashier 1989 and 1990 harvests that got more press at the time. To drink one of the very best from this harvest is a huge treat, and Champagne, even wine in general does not get better than this 1988 Krug Brut Champagne. Cinnamon and I drank this fabulous bottle, which was a gift from a great customer and friend as the aperitif in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The deep brassy color and generous chanterelle, cream and nutty Pinot Noir cherry nose gave way to a graceful, vivacious impression on the palate- this Champagne has it all. The finish is still with me if I think back to it and is one of the most complete experiences I have had from a wine. Wow!
Notes
This is fresh product, from the cellars of Krug. Eric Lebel does not think that the 1988 is mature enough yet to be called "collection," but we still managed to get a few bottles out of them! -Gary Westby
