This current release of Gosset “Grande Réserve” non-vintage Brut is from the base year of 2020 and is composed from a cépages of thirty-five percent chardonnay and sixty-five percent a blend of pinot noir and pinot meunier. The wine was aged four years sur latte and was finished with a dosage of five grams per liter. The wine’s bouquet is bright, complex and precise, hopping from the glass in a mix of apple, white peach, bread dough, chalky minerality and a topnote of gentle floral tones from the meunier in the blend. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, elegant and deep at the core, with fine soil undertow, a superb spine of acidity, refined mousse and impeccable balance on the long, complex and very classy finish. This is first class non-vintage Brut!

Lemon tart, spiced apples, almonds and pastries on the nose of this tasty Champagne. It’s fresh, lively and very precise, with fine bubbles and a light, chalky undertone.

Gosset’s Grande Réserve Brut NV is a blend of 45% each Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with 10% Pinot Meunier that is aged a minimum of four years on lees and finished with an eight grams per liter dosage. Fragrant and assertive, the nose displays aromas of preserved lemon, red currant, elderflower, chalk, whipped butter and honey. Medium-bodied and fused with vibrant, shimmering acidity and plush red fruit concentration, the palate is elegant and balanced throughout and has pretty, floral notes on the finish. (SM)

An elegant style, showing pinpoint balance between a sense of finesse and the vibrant energy imparted by the chiseled acidity and fine, focused perlage. It's a fine frame for a well-meshed range of white cherry, peach skin, spun honey and orange liqueur notes, with rich hints of pastry and smoked almond playing on the chalky finish. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. (AN)

We were very lucky to have Gosset export director Bertrand Verduzier come from Epernay to present his Champagne at the summit this year, and we learned a ton about this very old grand marque. Their flag ship wine is the Gosset "Grande Réserve" Brut Champagne, and it is an exceptional wine. The current batch is composed of 43% Chardonnay, 42% Pinot Noir and 15% Meunier with 20% reserves that are blended in the solera style. They never do any malolactic fermentation for this wine, and as such need to age it for a minimum of 4 years on the lees before disgorgement. It has an almost green color in the glass, and has a great tension between opulent toast and chalky, nearly apple like crunch. If you like this Champagne, be sure to put some in the cellar, I have had them going back 30 years and they are spectacular with age as well as young!

Gosset is the oldest Champagne house. It was established in 1584 in Ay, which is 145 years before Ruinart, the oldest all sparkling producer, opened its doors in 1729. When you make wine for 439 years you know a thing or two. The Gosset Grand Reserve Brut NV is drinking beautifully. It's 45% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir, 10% Meunier and it is aged three years on the lees (the minimum requirement for vintage champagne). This has great viscosity, a creamy full bodied texture, delicate pastry crust, and loads of tropical fruit. Easily one of the best NV champagnes from the big houses. At the immaculate price of $49.99 the Grand Reserve is a mind blowing steal.

$50 for a Grande Marque? Incredible! While I typically choose grower-producer Champagnes (especially since K&L's Direct Import program is so strong), this Gosset Grande Réserve Brut is always welcome, and even feels like a bargain, considering the quality of grapes and the house's history (which dates back to 1584!). A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (from Grand Cru village Aÿ), with a touch of Meunier, this nonvintage release includes about 20% reserve wines, solera-style blended, and spends six years on the lees. If you're after a big name that delivers, make sure Gosset is on your list.
