Fresh and harmonious, with a minerally overtone and satinlike texture, this shows a subtle mesh of poached pear and white cherry, tangerine peel, blanched almond and pickled ginger flavors that expands through the finish. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. (AN)

Based on the 2020 vintage and disgorged in December 2024 with a dosage of eight grams per liter, the latest release of Laurent-Perrier’s NV Brut La Cuvée opens with aromas of nashi pear, quince, peach and jasmine. On the palate, it presents a medium-bodied profile—taut yet somewhat lean—propelled by bright acidity and a youthfully frothy mousse, concluding with a subtle saline finish. Within the landscape of the grandes marques, high-volume entry-level cuvées are frequently eclipsed by other wines as one ascends the house’s hierarchy, and this is certainly true here: the wine is comparatively understated and fails to convey the depth one might reasonably expect. A great value in Grand Marque Brut Champagne! This is a blend of 45% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 15% Meunier that has a nice nose of fresh baguette and a clean, racy impression in the mouth. A very good aperitif!

While I applaud the shift to the sophisticated La Cuvee, there will always be a spot in my heart for Laurent-Perrier’s delicious original Brut. This is an easygoing Champagne whose supreme drinkability almost outshines its incredible quality. But make no mistake: the pedigree is there. Aged nearly four years on the lees and composed of a whopping 50% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, and 15% Pinot Meunier, most of which is sourced from Grand Cru vineyards, this is a layered, elegant Champagne that quietly wows. Apple and pear fruit soars up front, with rich texture through the palate and the Grand Marque’s hallmark crisp finish. There is some delightful chalkiness and racy lift, but overall this bargain-priced Brut is a knockout crowd pleaser, accessible and impressive.

Always one of my favorite of the Grand Marques, the Laurent Perrier nonvintage Brut is rich, focused, bright and poised all at once. It has flavors of Meyer lemon, nectarine, and honeyed pear with a hint of smoke, fully integrated leesy toast and a taut acid line that makes the finish last for ages. This champagne carries the prestige of being a Grand Marque without the high cost. It’s definitely a “best buy.”
