Bid on this bottle of 1984 Penfolds "Grange" Shiraz South Australia (94RP, 91VN, 91WS). Wine Advocate: "The best showing ever for this wine from my perspective, this blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon is considered a relatively forward, accessible style of Grange. The color is still a dark plum/purple, and the wine shows plenty of sweet cassis, with notes of chocolate and toasty oak. The wine is opulent and luscious, with great intensity, full body, and fabulous extract. The acidity seems relatively low and integrated, and the tannins quite ripe. (RP)" (01/2002)

The last wine is served blind. I know I am out of my depth here. Whatever this is, I don’t have a reference point. The fruit is sweet, dense and textured. To me, it is a thirty year-old wine aged in American oak. That’s as close as I can get. It would have taken me quite some time to get to Australian Shiraz, which I have very little familiarity with. Although tough to taste after all the Chaves, the 1984 Penfolds Grange is a very good wine that is peaking but that also shows no sign of fading. (AG)
