When the wine hits the mouth with its enormous weight and extraction of flavor, one can't help but be seduced by such enormous richness and purity. Nevertheless, there is still a remarkably high level of tannin (sweet rather than astringent), a youthful, unevolved fruit character, and flavors that stain the palate. Dense and full bodied, the 1988 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne is simply a monumental wine that is drinking perfectly. It sports full throttle aromatics that develop over the evening, showing gorgeous black fruits, truffle, forest floor, smoked meats, Asian spices and roast coffee on the nose. These carry over to the palate where the wine is beautifully integrated with a concentrated, chewy mid-palate, an awesome silky texture, and a long, seamless finish.
