Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1976 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96JS, 93JG, 93RP, 92VN). James Suckling: "This is the wine of the vintage. I love the rosewater, currants and citrus character to this now. It's still full body yet so ethereal. It goes on and on in the finish turning creamy and citrusy." (10/2016)

Along with Château Ausone, Lafite has long been one of my two favorite wines of the 1976 vintage. In relative terms, it did not take this lovely wine all that long to start to drink with the distinction of maturity, as I was enjoying bottles back in the early 1990s and it continues to cruise along beautifully (at least in magnum). The nose is pure, refined and nicely tertiary now in its blend of cherries, sweet cigar wrapper, a lovely base of gravelly soil tones, coffee, a touch of currant leaf and a discreet framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, suave and intensely flavored, with lovely focus and grip, melted tannins and a long, complex and very polished finish. This continues to have lovely acidity to keep it fresh and light on its feet, though its tannins have already been gone for more than a decade! A lovely middleweight vintage of Lafite.
