Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Domaine Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (93BH, 92RP). Burghound: "Here the fully secondary and wonderfully spicy nose also reflects notes of sous bois, earth and a hint of that pungent Gevrey animale character. There is good richness and plenty of attractive vibrancy to the solidly concentrated and still overtly powerful flavors that are supported by slightly edgy tannins on the long and mouth coating finish. Note that the mouth feel changed considerably with only 10 to 15 minutes of air and the finishing structure became less pronounced and if not completely well-integrated, then no longer a significant balance issue. I very much admire the complexity and this is still quite a robust Clos de Bèze that could be enjoyed now or held for many more years to come thanks to the large format bottle." (07/2012)

Not surprisingly, the Chambertin-Clos de Beze, always a winner from this house, received 26 days of maceration in 1988. The result is a beautifully scented wine smelling of exotic spices, soy sauce, ground beef, and lots of ripe berry fruit. It is full bodied, very rich, but is not comparable to the celestial 1985. Nevertheless, it is an outstanding red burgundy from this vintage.
