Freemark Abbey’s defining moment came in the late 1970s, when it emerged as one of Napa Valley’s most influential wineries. The foundation was laid in 1970 with the debut of Cabernet Bosché, one of California’s earliest vineyard-designate Cabernet Sauvignons. A year later, the wine earned top honors in a blind tasting against leading Bordeaux wines, helping establish Napa Cabernet’s credibility. The turning point arrived in 1976 when Freemark Abbey participated in the historic Judgment of Paris with both its 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon and 1972 Chardonnay, the only winery represented in both categories. The tasting’s success elevated Napa Valley’s international reputation and brought unprecedented attention to Freemark Abbey.
