Bid on this 6-magnum lot of 2012 Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay (1.5L) (92VN), from the historic Calistoga estate founded in 1882, whose Chardonnay famously outranked four top white Burgundies at the 1976 “Judgment of Paris.” Sourced from cool south-central Napa Valley vineyards near the base of Mount Veeder, aged 10 months in French oak with only 8% new, and made without malolactic fermentation to keep it bright and fresh, the 2012 comes from a blockbuster Napa vintage of near-perfect ripening weather. Expect white peach, pear, green apple and lemon oil layered with almond, spice and a touch of smoke, with a silky, generous texture balanced by fine acidity and a long, focused finish. A collectible large-format lot from one of America’s most iconic Chardonnay producers, ideal with roast chicken, lobster and seafood.

(just 8% new oak): Bright yellow. Rather Chablis-like aromas of apple and resin, plus a hint of honey. Sweet and ripe in the nature of the vintage, offering a touch of creaminess to the flavors of fresh peach, apple, herbs and spices. Shows a broad spectrum of ripeness without any obvious extremes. A very successful vintage for this wine. (ST)

It had been many years since I last tasted Château Montelena’ s Napa bottling of chardonnay, which used to be one of my favorites in all of California, as its non-malo style has always provided a lovely spine of acidity for the wines to age long and gracefully. The 2012 is a bit riper than the ones I remember so fondly from yesteryear, coming in at 13.8 percent alcohol, but the wine is fresh and vibrant on the nose and only shows a whisper of backend heat on the palate. The bouquet offers up a fine blend of pear, peach, acacia blossoms, a touch of almond paste and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, crisp and full-bodied, with a fine core, good focus and grip and a long, youthful and ever so slightly warm finish.
