2022 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Gevrey-Chambertin "Combe du Dessus"

Old vines from Amélie ’s grandfather’s time. This vineyard was not much hit by the hail but benefitted from the rain, which removed the risk of drought stress which can be a problem here. There was no space to put in any stems. Dense purple, showing the oak a little. Plenty of weight here, rich dark cherry fruit. Just bottled.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe du Dessus, once part of Berthaut's Gevrey Village, is very understated on the nose yet well-defined with subtle aromas of wild strawberries, cranberries, sous-bois and dried rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. Very elegant and poised, actually reminiscent of a Rousseau in many ways. Gently caressing on the finish. This will drink early and will be difficult to resist. (NM)
