Bid on this bottle of 2018 Domaine J-F Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru (97VN, (95-97RP)), one of the most coveted wines in Burgundy, from Frédéric Mugnier, the second-largest owner of this legendary Chambolle-Musigny Grand Cru with 1.13 hectares of old vines, whose pure, ethereal style has earned a devoted collector following. As usual the most backward and reserved wine in the Mugnier cellar, the 2018 unfurls with ripe cherries, wild and brambly red berries, forest floor and dark chocolate, framed by notes of musk, violets and a faint touch of iodine. The palate is full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with a concentrated core of fruit, an ample frame of powdery tannin and a long, lively finish. A brooding, muscular Musigny that William Kelley noted will need time to show all its cards, built for decades in the cellar.

Freddy Mugnier has 1.13ha of Musigny, spread over two parcels, which is not as much as some but still a decent slice of the Grand Cru. And what a wine this is: intensely aromatic, finely balanced and beautifully weighted, with notes of aromatic spices, wild berry fruit, sculpted tannins and profound depth and structure. Will only get better in bottle. (TA)

The 2018 Musigny from Domaine Mugnier is a gorgeous example of the vintage. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a refined blend of plums, black cherries, raw cocoa, a great base of complex soil tones, woodsmoke, cedar and a pungent topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and sappy, with lovely backend mineral drive, ripe, buried tannins and a lovely sense of grace on the long, intensely flavored and vibrant finish. This is a puppy and will not be released for many years to come, but it seems destined to be one of the finest red wines of the 2018 vintage.
