Wild, liqueur-like aromas of currant, tar, menthol, graphite and wild herbs. Lush, creamy and impressively rich, with superb depth of flavor for California merlot. Highly complex flavors of currant, tobacco, iron, graphite and spices ("pencil shavings and rusty nails, " offers Kongsgaard). Int'l Wine Cellar
06/2004Notes
Arietta began in 1996 when wine auctioneer Fritz Hatton and his partners launched a small Napa Valley project inspired by a shared love of fine wine and classical music. The winery built its reputation around meticulously selected vineyard blocks in the cooler reaches of Napa, with Hudson Vineyard serving as a cornerstone from the beginning. The label’s distinctive artwork comes from Beethoven’s Arietta movement, which also gave the winery its name. The Arietta Hudson Vineyard Merlot comes from Lee Hudson’s famed Carneros property, where some of the vineyard’s oldest Merlot vines were planted in 1986. Hudson Vineyard sits on Napa Carneros soils shaped by volcanic and marine influences and benefits from the region’s cool bay-driven climate. Arietta sources fruit from specific Hudson blocks and produces the wine in limited quantities, continuing a vineyard partnership that has defined the winery for decades.
