Bid on this bottle of 2014 Domaine François Cotat "Les Monts Damnes" Sancerre Chavignol. Located in the western half of the Sancerre appellation, Chavignol's steep, south-facing Monts Damnés vineyard sits on a chalk plateau of Kimmeridgian limestone — the same "terres blanches" found in Chablis — with thin topsoils and vines averaging 30 years old. Hand-harvested and pressed full cluster in an older wooden vertical press, fermented on indigenous yeasts in very old demi-muids and aged in older tonneaux, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Aromas of yellow stone fruits, citrus, light smoke and wildflowers lead into a palate of bitter lemon, apricot and candied quince, with excellent depth and the singular intensity that defines the Cotat style.

The 2014 vintage of Monts Damnés from François Cotat is an absolute classic. It comes in at thirteen percent octane and is quite dry on the palate, showing none of the residual sugar found in this bottling from recent riper years. The bouquet is nicely into its secondary level of complexity, wafting from the glass in a complex blend of lime, pear, chalky minerality, a lovely array of Chavignol botanicals, beeswax, a touch of anise, fruit blossoms and a topnote of candied citrus peel. On the palate the wine is deep, precise and full-bodied, with a lovely core of fruit, excellent soil signature, a fine spine of acidity and a very long, seamlessly balanced and wide open and succulent finish. Great juice.
