It seems that in every vintage, one of the lesser-priced Williams Selyem Pinots stands out as an especially good value, and this year there are two. This one is brimming with very pure, keenly defined varietal fruit and displays surprising finesse given its all too evident ripeness. It is all velvet in feel, and its shows terrific extension at the finish, and, while not about to fade away soon, it is absolutely delicious right now. *One Star*

Dark red. Dark cherry and cassis aromas are ripe but also energetic, thanks to a vibrant mineral topnote. Silky and sweet, with bright red berry flavors, supple tannins and a gentle baking spice tone. A smoky note arrives on the back, adding complexity to the long, expansive finish.

Fresh red berry, orange peel and baking spice aromas offer very good clarity, taking on a floral quality with air. Vibrant redcurrant and wild strawberry flavors are light on their feet, with tangy citrus peel and white pepper adding verve. Finishes sweet, clean and brisk. Cabral told me that this is virtually all Russian River Valley fruit, and that 40% of the grapes were estate-grown. (ST)
