Bid on this bottle of 2021 Domaine François Buffet Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes". This 1er Cru takes its name from an ancient species of oak that disappeared centuries ago, and shows off the magnificence of Pinot Noir on chalky marl terroir. An elegant and well-structured wine with good depth and ample fine tannins on the medium-bodied palate, the red berry fruit is discrete but joined by savory complexity, closing with good length and some aging potential. Aged 18 months in oak barrels. 91 (JS) 09/2023.

More deeply pitched and restrained aromas include those of plum, violet, clove and anise. The more robust, muscular and denser medium-bodied flavors deliver excellent persistence on the more structured and powerful finish. As is virtually always the case with Clos des Chênes, this is going to need at least a few years of patience and should be capable of rewarding a decade plus.

An elegant and well-structured Volnay 1er Cru with good depth and ample fine tannins on the medium-bodied palate. The red berry fruit is discrete, but there’s also some savory complexity. Good length and some aging potential. Drink or hold.
