2016 Josef Spreitzer Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Kabinett

Exceedingly ripe pear, Persian melon and quince are garlanded in honeysuckle and rowan on a seductive nose and luscious, glossy yet buoyant and animating palate. There is a delightfully sorbet-like aspect to this: at once rich and with a suggestion of creaminess, yet cooling and refreshingly juicy. Not for the first time, the Spreitzers have bottled as Kabinett a wine that any grower or professional taster prior to the 1990s would have classed as Auslese, or at least as Spätlese, a fact that is also reflected in it having originated with musts in the upper 90s Oechsle. Nevertheless, its buoyancy and animation offer some justification for the moniker “Kabinett” – and the wine is terrific regardless. (DS)
