Leading off the 2012s, the Saint Joseph les Coteaux is a solid value that offers classic saddle leather, ground herbs, pepper and sweet blackberry and raspberry fruit. It’s medium-bodied, supple and elegant, with plenty of fruit. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years. (JD)

A fresh, racy style, with bright chalk and violet notes highlighting the damson plum, cherry and black currant fruit. Savory and white pepper details run through the energetic finish. Drink now through 2019

An attractive meaty savory edge to this dense and concentrated shiraz, plenty of deep plum and fragrant spice on the nose, the palate delivers a supple twirling core of dark plum and black cherry fruit right through to a long and flavorsome, smoothly hewn finish. Deceptive power here. Drink now.

Notes

95 points Wine Front: "Deep flavour. But lively. This is terrific drinking. Rich and generous but honed and architectural. Plums, blackberries, saltbush and a swoosh of cedarwood. A touch of red-fruited brightness. Cracking wine. Whole berries. Whole bunches. Wild yeast. All French oak, only 20% new."

The 2013 Cotes du Rhone Les Deux Albions is 50-60% Syrah and the rest Grenache and other permitted varieties. It exhibits classic Syrah character with its sweet dark fruits, pepper, wood smoke and crushed rock-like minerality. Medium to full-bodied, it bucks the vintage stereotype and has a rounded, supple texture, good concentration and plenty of length. Possibly outstanding. (JD)

My favorite of his wines was the 2013 Syrah The Villain. An equal part blend of Susan's Hill and Garys Vineyard from the Santa Lucia Highlands, aged 14 months in 20% new French oak with 70% whole cluster and no fining or filtering, this is a beauty. Blackberry, roasted meats, a whiff of forest floor and white flowers are all present in this well-made, medium to full-bodied, lush, heady wine. (RP)

Notes

Shane Wine Cellars is the project of winemaker Shane Finley, whose small-production wines focus on expressive cool-climate sites across California’s North Coast and Central Coast. The Villain comes from the Santa Lucia Highlands, where elevated vineyards above the Salinas Valley are exposed to persistent winds and cool air drawn inland from Monterey Bay, extending the growing season and preserving Syrah’s freshness and aromatic intensity. The 2013 bottling captures that distinctive terroir, combining dark fruit and spice with savory complexity, peppery lift, and the firm structure characteristic of Syrah from this windswept appellation.

2013 Rhone Valley Vineyards " Journee de Mistral Ventoux" Grenache

Journée de Mistral crafts Grenache-driven wines in the Ventoux region of France’s southern Rhône, where cool mistral winds help shape the vineyards and keep the wines fresh and lively.

2014 Château Maris "Old School" Minervois

2014 Château Maris "Old School" Minervois

Quantity:1Bottle Size:750 ml

Château Maris sits in La Livinière, the first cru village of Minervois, where Robert Eden and Kevin Parker acquired the estate in 1997 with the goal of producing high-quality wines while restoring vineyard health through organic and biodynamic farming. Today, the estate encompasses hillside parcels around La Livinière and has been certified organic since 2002 and biodynamic since 2008. The Old School Minervois reflects that hands-on philosophy, coming from a winery recognized as Europe’s first B Corp-certified vineyard and long regarded as a pioneer of sustainable viticulture in the Languedoc.

2014 François Villard "l'Appel des Sereines" Syrah Collines Rhodanniens

2014 François Villard "l'Appel des Sereines" Syrah Collines Rhodanniens

Quantity:1Bottle Size:750 ml

François Villard is one of the northern Rhône’s leading modern growers, based near Condrieu and known for expressive Syrah from steep, granite-rich vineyards. L’Appel des Sereines comes from young-vine and regional parcels outside the major crus, where decomposed granite soils and cool continental conditions give Syrah freshness, peppery lift, and savory definition. The 2014 bottling reflects the elegance of the vintage, combining bright dark fruit with floral aromatics, spice, and the mineral tension characteristic of northern Rhône Syrah.

The 2014 Fausse Piste “Garde Manger” bottling of syrah is a tad less ripe than the fine 2012 Vignes de Marcoux syrah cuvée from the winery (13.5 percent versus 14.1 percent) and it is a bit tighter on the palate (not too surprising, given it is two years younger), but equally promising. The fine nose offers up a nascently complex constellation of cassis, dark chocolate, black pepper, a nice touch of grilled meat, fine minerality, a touch of cedar and a nice smoky topnote redolent of bonfires. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and solid at the core, with excellent mineral drive, ripe tannins and a long, tangy and palate-staining finish. This reminds me stylistically quite a bit of Raymond Trollat’s bottlings of St. Joseph back in the day. Fine, fine juice, which is approachable now, but will really start to sing with three or four years in the cellar. 92+

Notes

Producer Note: "Food friendly syrah from vineyards across the Pacific Northwest, 80 % whole cluster fermentation with aging in older neutral French oak barrels and puncheons for 11 months on the lees. Our Garde Manger is a blend of each vineyard we source syrah from in each vintage. Bottled unfined with minimal so2 addition."

Lionel Faury makes this wine from about two acres of syrah, the oldest vines dating to 1937, the youngest to 1976. He vinifies it like he does his other St-Joseph, destemming about three-quarters of the fruit, leaving it to ferment in temperature-controlled vats for 15 to 20 days, then resting it for a year in a mix of large and small oak barrels, mostly old. It smells awesome, floral and spicy, with a freshness that's invigorating; it tastes just as good, the sun-kissed ripeness of the black fruit melding with cold, hard mineral tones into a seamless expanse of dark flavor. For all its density, it feels agile and energetic, youthful St-Joseph to enjoy now or cellar another five or ten years.

Opaque ruby. A seductively perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, olive, licorice and smoky minerals. Sappy and vibrant in the mouth, showing a supple, seamless character to the sweet black raspberry, boysenberry and violet pastille flavors. The blue fruit and licorice qualities build steadily on a long, sweet finish that's firmed by sneaky, harmonious tannins. (JR)
