Medium to deep garnet colour. Pretty, fresh blackberry and warm cherry aromas on the nose with fragrant nuances of rose petals and Chinese five spice. The tannins are firm yet finely grained and accessible. A crisp backbone of acidity provides freshness and perfect balance to the rich, ripe fruit flavours. The style straddles that wonderfully fine line between elegance and decadence. Very long finish with lingering notes of black truffles. Drinking now but will certainly open and soften with 4-5 years more cellaring. Should continue to develop through 2020+. (LPB)

The 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo is just starting to show early signs of tertiary notes, but only in its bouquet, as the wine remains rich, full-bodied and ample on the palate. New leather, licorice, menthol, red cherries and smoke are all layered into the tannic finish. The 2004 was an exceptional wine when it was made, but it has since been surpassed, a testament to proprietor Giovanni Manetti's drive, ambition and skill. Still, my sense is that the 2004 may be going through a bit of a closed phase. I am tempted to let bottles sit for another year or two. (AG)

The 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is a very pretty Il Poggio that today is in an in-between stage where it is not young, yet not mature, either. For that reason, I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years. Readers will find a lithe, elegant Il Poggio that captures the essence of what was a long, cool growing season. This is quite lovely, an Il Poggio of understatement rather than power. This is the first Il Poggio aged in 500-liter barrels, the beginning of a return to larger format wood.

The 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is simply gorgeous. It is a layered, finessed wine of notable detail, with tons of potential hiding behind its restrained facade. With air, notes of earthiness, tobacco, spices, menthol and dark fruit gradually emerge from this classically built wine. Although the wine is beautifully balanced today, it requires additional cellaring to blossom fully. In 2004 Il Poggio was aged exclusively in aged tonneaux, which signals a move away from a percentage of new oak and smaller barrels that recent previous vintage had seen. The change in aging regime seems to allow for the full breadth of the unique qualities of Sangiovese and the Il Poggio vineyard to come through. (AG)
