Decanter

The 2012 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon is dark-fruited and lifted, with brown baking spices, graphite, and crème de cassis. The palate is full-bodied, with a deep dark fruit profile resonating with intensity. The very fine-grained, cedar-kissed tannins provide a firm base for the dark berry fruit, which finishes with intense caramel and toffee spice notes—sampled during a vertical tasting of Groth wines (1982–2022) in early 2024 with proprietor Dennis Groth. The winemaker in 2012 was Michael Weis. (JC) (05/2024)

Wine Spectator

A stylish red, showing steeped black currant preserves mixed in with alluring notes of singed vanilla, black licorice anise and black tea. The fleshy, persistent finish offers good energy, with mouthwatering acidity nicely buried amid the fruit. -- Non-blind Groth Cabernet vertical (August 2024). Drink now through 2036. (JL) (10/2024)

Int'l Wine Review

The Cabernet is a blend of 88% Cabernet with 12% Merlot. This was aged 22 months in French oak barrels (65% new) prior to bottling. There are aromas of cedar, blackberry and mocha. The wine is open and polished with flavors of blackberry, graphite, anise, creme de cassis and mild tannins. There is a marvelous mouthfeel to this wine, with brisk minerality. (OB) (10/2015)
