This is a structured red that’s built by broad tannins but approachable in its youth. Earthy peat, dried herb, cedar and cigar box play against a depth of dark cherry, cassis and plum, while fresh acidity permeates beneath, making for a cohesive package. (VB)

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Solari is a smaller production cuvée and is (as always) all Cabernet Sauvignon that was aged in 90% new French oak. Its similar inky purple color is followed by a beautiful nose of pure cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with notes of dark chocolate, violets, crushed herbs, and plenty of chocolaty, earthy minerality. Rich, full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated, it stays focused, tight and backward on the palate, yet is loaded with potential.

Moving to the two reds, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is brilliant all the way, offering a smorgasbord-like bouquet of blueberries, raspberries, spring flowers, cured meats, tobacco, and assorted other spicy, floral nuances. I always find a subtle red fruit and mineral character in top Stags Leap Cabernet, and this beauty has it in spades. Full-bodied on the palate, this pure, plush, sexy Napa Valley Cabernet has sweet tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Seemingly all about sweet fruit and texture, it's nevertheless going to evolve for 20-25 years.

Odette's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is sumptuous, rich and wonderfully expressive, with bright acids that lend striking energy as well as vibrancy. Crème de cassis, chocolate, new leather, licorice, espresso and lavender fill out the layers effortlessly. A reduction in new oak really lets the personality of this site and the vintage come through. The 2018 is showing beautifully today. (AG)

From the estate property around the new winery in Stags Leap, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Moonracer (there are normally small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the blend) offers a glorious Napa Cabernet nose of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, dried flowers, and chocolate that develops beautifully with time in the glass. It doesn't lose a beat on the palate either and is full-bodied, with a layered, focused texture, building structure, and a great, great finish. It's a serious, age-worthy wine that needs 4-5 years of bottle age yet will evolve like a First Growth from Bordeaux. 98+

Also all Cabernet Sauvignon, and the first vintage where this team has also done the farming, the 2018 Farella Estate spent 16 months in 75% new French oak. More vibrant red and blue fruits, graphite, flowers, and spice notes define this beauty, which is full-bodied and has an elegant, seamless texture, great tannins, and a beautiful, classy style.

The flagship single-vineyard wine from Dan Petroski at Larkmead is remarkable in 2018. Comprised of two parcels at the southern border of Calistoga, bordering St. Helena. Soils are a combination of Cortina gravel and Pleasanton clay. A major level up in every dimension from the already fantastic Napa Valley Cabernet, the nose is enthralling: savoury and floral, ripe but restrained, smoldering and spry. The texture is seamless, multidimensional, bubt has a rustic authentically to it. A truly fantastic wine, and one to be looked to as a benchmark for balance, complexity, age-worthiness and transparency. (ML)

The 2018 Syrah Eleven Confessions Vineyard is pure gold and Syrah doesn't get any better, no matter what region you're talking about. Incredible notes of ripe cherries, currants, ground black and white pepper, cured meats, and saddle leather all soar from the glass, and it's full-bodied, deep, and concentrated on the palate. Opening up with time in the glass, it certainly offers pleasure today yet warrants 2-4 years of bottle age and will have two decades of overall longevity. Hats off to the Krankl family for another utterly magical wine.

The 2018 Syrah Eleven Confessions Vineyard is slow to unfold but stunning once it opens, featuring layered aromas of cassis, coffee beans, garrigue and cracked pepper before segueing to soaring floral perfume. A blend of 82% Syrah, 10.6% Grenache, 5.3% Petite Sirah and 2.1% Viognier, it's made entirely of estate fruit. It was fermented with 28% whole clusters and matured about 38 months in 50% new French oak. It has an opaque ruby-purple in color, and the palate is full-bodied, powerful and seamless, boasting powdery tannins and integrated acidity. It has a concentrated core of floral fruit and a tremendously long finish. It was bottled on December 15, 2021, and tasted May 24, 2022. 978 cases and 276 magnums will be released in the fall of 2022. (EB)

A nearly equal partnership of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the herbal, earthy goodness of the Franc is in fine form here, aromatic in violet and cedar notes as well. A wine that flirts with perfection, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is 100% Cabernet from a site on Pritchard Hill. It’s a dead ringer for a great vintage of Haut-Brion, and while I normally save that comparison for the Dr. Crane release, it’s every bit as warranted here. Quintessential Cabernet notes of dark currants, tobacco, earth, and chocolate give way to a full-bodied, rich, powerful, yet also perfectly balanced wine delivering ripe tannins, incredible depth, and a magical finish.

Loads of iron-shaving and lead-pencil aromas follow through to a medium to full body. Texture of thick silk. Extremely refined and polished tannins. So long and distinctive and typical for the area of Pritchard Hill. Needs three or four year to soften and come together.

While the Grand Vin gets all the attention, don’t miss the 2019 M. Étain. This cuvée offers so much pleasure, and it also has a unique style all its own. Based on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 4% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, its deep purple color is followed by a great bouquet of cassis, violets, leafy herbs, black olive, and crushed stone. Full-bodied, it has a terrific mix of richness and freshness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. While it’s a second wine at this address, it’s as good as just about everyone else’s top cuvée. The 2019 M. Étain is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. The late bottled 2019 Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard is another undeniably great wine from this incredible estate and it tops out my scale. Based on 89% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Petite Sirah, and the balance Gelber Muskateller (Muscat Blanc), all from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills, it spent 39 months in 50% new French oak, with the balance in 2- to 5-year-old barrels. It's a powerful, full-bodied, opulent Grenache that brings to mind a great vintage of Domaine de Marcoux's Vieilles Vignes with its gorgeous red and black fruits, smoked herbs, leather, and assorted spicy, sandalwood, and peppery nuances. Full-bodied on the palate, it has flawless balance, a deep, layered mid-palate, and velvety tannins. It brings that rare mix of richness and elegance that only Grenache can.

The 2019 Eleven Confessions Vineyard Grenache is deep garnet-black in color. Notes of Christmas pudding, blackberry pie, and boysenberry preserves slowly awaken and emerge before opening out to fragrant suggestions of licorice, Indian spices, potpourri, and chargrill with a touch of cinnamon stick. The full-bodied palate explodes with powerful flavors of black fruit preserves, exotic spices, and floral nuances, paved by velvety tannins with beautiful freshness, finishing long and opulent. Coming 100% from the Krankls' Eleven Confessions Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills, the blend this year is 89.4% Grenache, 5.5% Syrah, and 4.1% Petite Sirah with a 1% splash of Gelber Muskateller (a white grape - Muscat Blanc à Petit Grains). 35% whole clusters were used in the winemaking. It was aged for around 39 months in French oak barrels, mainly large demi-muids, 50% new. It was bottled in January 2023. 922 cases and 240 magnums were made. (LPB)

Crafted by winemaker Dan Petroski, who passed the torch to Avery Heelan in 2021. This was aged 18 months in mostly new French oak. Tremendously savoury and alluring aromas of black olive, baked clay, garrigue and brown scorched earth. Silken layers of blackberry, juicy plums and red currants find espresso beans and a lively vein of blood orange-like acidity. Perfectly integrated tannins that are fine-grained and precise. All built to a lavender-tinged finish. From Napa Green Certified vines. (JC)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon The Lark continues to show beautifully, with a balanced, graceful, and surprisingly forward style. Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in new barrels, it has lots of savory blackcurrant and raspberry-like fruits as well as a kaleidoscope-like array of dried flowers, vanilla bean, baking chocolate, loamy earth, and leather. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has superb overall balance, ripe, polished tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. The 2019 Eleven Confessions Vineyard Syrah is deep garnet-black in color. A mushroom cloud of exotic spices and incense erupts from the glass, leading to a core of plum preserves and blueberry pie, plus suggestions of dark chocolate, black truffles, mossy tree bark, and iron ore. A borderline perfect wine is the 2019 Syrah Eleven Confessions Vineyard, and if there was a version of Guigal's Côte Rôtie La Mouline from California, this would be it. Red and black fruits, flowery incense, iron, cured meats, spice box, and background oak all define this sensational wine, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, ultra-fine mouthfeel, no hard edges, and a great finish. Everything works together as it shows incredible purity and freshness all the way through the long expressive finish. The full-bodied palate is concentrated and still youthfully coiled. It has a fine, grainy texture, fresh acidity and a long, floral finish. (EB) 98+

The 2019 Syrah Distenta I is brilliant, and certainly one of the Syrahs of the vintage. Sporting a vivid ruby, almost opaque hue, it offers awesome, textbook Syrah notes of assorted red and blackberry fruits, bacon fat, smoked meat, and an incredible floral character that develops with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it's a more elegant, restrained Sine Qua Non revealing flawless balance, beautiful freshness and elegance, silky tannins, and one heck of a finish. Still a baby that needs a lengthy decant if drinking any time soon (this bottle showed best on the second day, at which point it was drunk), it will benefit from a solid 4-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades after that. 98+

A wine that just about tops out the scale, the 2020 Syrah Distenta II (83% Syrah, 8% Grenache, 4% Mourvèdre, and the balance Petite Sirah and mixed whites) is a more exuberant, spicy, incredibly complex Syrah offering assorted red and black fruits, ground pepper, flowery incense, tobacco, and cured meat nuances in its full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, layered, elegant style. Coming 43% from the Third Twin, 33% Eleven Confessions, 21% Cumulus, and the rest from the Molly Aida vineyards (all of which are estate), it saw slightly less whole clusters compared to the 2021 and spent 23 months in 66% new French oak. Anyone questioning the genius of Manfred Krankl needs to taste this wine.

The vineyard sources are The Third Twin (43%), Eleven Confessions (32%), Cumulus (21%), and Molly Aïda (3%)—all estate-owned vineyards. The fermentation included 16% whole clusters, and it was aged for 23 months in 66% new French oak. Gregarious scents of charcoal, lilacs, licorice, and boysenberry preserves swan out of the glass, giving way to hints of wild sage, fragrant earth, and tapenade. The only wine produced by this great estate in the vintage, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a deep ruby/plum hue to go with terrific aromatics of ripe black fruits, graphite, iron, and background spicy wood. With tons of minerality on the palate as well as medium to full-bodied richness, it has ripe tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. 92+

Tasted out of bottle, the 2020 Grenache Distenta II is total blockbuster stuff that's darker and richer than the 2021. Red and black fruits, white pepper, classy leather, and spicy baking chocolate-like nuances all define the aromatics, and it’s deep, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, with gorgeous tannins and a great finish. The blend is 78% Grenache, 9% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah, and the rest Petite Sirah (with a splash of Viognier), and it's going to knock your socks off any time over the coming 15+ years.

The 2021 Grenache Distenta III shows the cooler, more elegant style of the vintage, yet it's still 100% Sine Qua Non goodness with its richness and concentration. Beautiful black raspberries, ground pepper, sandalwood, and sappy flower notes are just some of the nuances in this beauty, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel, beautifully polished tannins, and a great, great finish. Give it 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15+. The 2021 is 79% Grenache, 8.4% Syrah, 7.4% Mourvedre, and the rest Petite Sirah and white varieties, fermented with 35% whole clusters, all aged 23 months in just 42% new barrels.

It was made using around 34.7% whole clusters, mainly of the Grenache, and was aged for around 23 months in French oak, mostly larger demi-muids barrels, 42.3% new. It reveals a moderately deep ruby-purple color. Upon smelling—wow! The incredible perfume rockets from the glass: black raspberries, kirsch, black currants, and violets, leading to underlying hints of tar, black truffles, and damp soil. The full-bodied palate delivers a rock-solid structure of firm, finely grained tannins and a refreshing line, perfectly framing the bright, well-defined black and red berry flavors, finishing long and earthy. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is positively stellar. Dark fruit, savory herbs, leather, licorice and menthol race out of the glass. Powerful and vertical, with serious intensity, the 2021 is a super-classic Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon. All the elements are so well balanced. Graphite, incense and a whole range of mineral/savory tones linger on the brooding finish. Specifically, the tannins are incredibly refined—quite an achievement for this site. The full-bodied palate is packed with concentrated black fruit and earthy flavors, supported by firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long with a peppery lift. This Nine Suns label, named after the former winery, is a one-time wine made only in 2021, following the Realm purchase of the Nine Suns Winery and the surrounding Houyi Vineyard in 2022. The former winemaking consultant, Philippe Melka, made the wine and the Realm team blended and bottled it. “Our first instinct was to blend it in with our Houyi Vineyard wine,” said owner Scott Becker. “But this constructed so differently. We wanted to honor what Philippe did. So, this is a one-off label.” Only 500 cases were made, and the fruit is all off the Houyi vineyard. (LPB)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Hartwell XX is another perfect wine in this lineup. From vines around the estate in Stags Leap, its saturated purple hue is followed by a deep, majestic, massively concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon offering incredible purity and depth in its blackcurrant, Griotte cherry, loamy earth, and dried flower-like aromas and flavors. I tasted the 2021 Syrah Distenta III as a precise blend from barrel on July 6—it's due to be bottled in August. It comes from three estate vineyards: The Third Twin (51%), Cumulus (26%) and 23% Eleven Confessions (23%). The Syrah is blended with 11.3% Grenache, 3.3% Mourvèdre, 2.1% Petite Sirah, 0.9% Petit Manseng and 0.7% Muscat and was vinified using 21% whole clusters. It matured around 23 months in 53% new French oak, 43% one- to three-year-old barrels and 4% concrete. Opaque ruby-purple in the glass, the Distenta III's aromatic complexity requires plenty of patience, as a singular truffle, earth and coffee bean character gives way to electric streaks of crème de violette, blueberry liqueur and peppermint patty. The palate is medium to full-bodied and exceptionally light on its feet. It glides silkily through the mouth with fireworks of freshness, and its floral fruit is tempered by graphite tones. (EB)

The 2023 Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, after a little swirling, the nose erupts with a powerful perfume of cassis, violets, and juicy blackberries, giving way to underlying Chinese five spice, dusty soil, and garrigue hints. Full-bodied, the palate is classic To Kalon—rich and structured with firm yet velvety tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and ferrous. Gorgeous!

From the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, sourced from blocks near Highway 29, toward the back of the site, closer to the Mayacamas. One-third aged in concrete, and the remaining is aged 20 months in 70% new French oak. This site's characteristic loamy earth and black fruit is evident from the first sniff to the last sip, leading with beautifully fragrant dark berry fruit, ironstone mineral character, and mineral-accented tannins, with excellent mid-palate density and weight, while remaining incredibly light, energetic, and almost bouant. Finishing quote long with great mineral richness and loamy earth intensity. Really a very beautifully built wine capable of long-term cellaring.

The 2023 Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it is quite closed at this youthful stage, eventually unfurling to offer glimpses of crème de cassis, blueberry compote, and dark chocolate, leading to touches of lilacs, Provence herbs, crushed rocks, and underbrush. The concentrated, full-bodied palate is densely laden with black fruit preserves and perfumed floral and earth accents, supported by super-firm, grainy tannins and a lively line, finishing very long and decadent. Classic Crane.

Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 19 months in 75% new French oak, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard offers smoky blackcurrants, tobacco, gravelly earth, liquid violets, and freshly sharpened pencil. It's full-bodied, with a concentrated, layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I always find a certain Pessac/Graves-like character from this site (I've often compared this wine to Haut-Brion), and the 2023 has it in spades. This brilliant, sensationally complex, layered, and virtually perfect wine will keep for 30+ years. Drink 2029-2055.

Coming from a site in the cooler Coombsville appellation in the southern part of the valley and aged 20 months in 85% new French oak, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is incredibly floral and perfumed, with a red, blue, and black fruit core supported by spring flowers, violets, peppery herbs, and sappy tobacco. It's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered, focused mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. The balance, purity, and elegance here are world class. 98+

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is a potent, tightly wound wine, not surprising for a cooler site in a cold, late-ripening year. Blackberry, mocha, espresso, licorice, gravel and dried herbs build through the powerful mid-palate and huge finish as the 2023 gradually opens in the glass. In this vintage, the large-grained tannins are pretty imposing. The Farella has a lot of potential for readers who can be patient. This is an especially somber edition for the Farella, which is also the most backward wine in the Realm range. (AG)

The second vintage since they've taken over the farming at this property on Pritchard Hill, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is based on 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc and aged 19 months in 63% new French oak. Killer aromatics of blackcurrants, blueberries, melted crayon/graphite, violets, and scorched earth define the nose, and it's incredibly well-balanced and medium to full-bodied, with ripe, polished tannins and a great finish. Another seamless, pure, ultra-classic Cabernet Sauvignon that deserves 5-7 years of bottle age, it will be incredibly long lived. Drink 2030-2050. (Drink between 2030-2050) (JD)

Based on 61% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Sirah and aged 11 months in 72% new French oak, the 2023 The Tempest was bottled in January 2025. It offers beautifully textured and upfront black cherries, chocolaty herbs, tobacco, and gravelly earth. Medium to full-bodied, it has integrated acidity, sweet tannins, and a great finish. This pure, layered Merlot has tons to love and will evolve for two decades. Drink 2025-2045.

The full-bodied palate delivers nice bright black and blue fruit layers with lots of spicy sparks and a velvety texture, finishing long and satisfyingly opulent.

Aged 20 months in 80% new French oak, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Moonracer offers killer aromatics of darker currants, smoky tobacco, chocolate, and lead pencil that give this an almost Mouton Rothschild-like style. It's medium to full-bodied with a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and integrated acidity. Very much in the fresher, yet structured style of the vintage, it will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for 30 years or more. 98+

From Realm's estate Moonracer Vineyard in Stags Leap District. Fermented in stainless steel and aged 20 months in 80% new French oak. Beautiful savoury aromas of licorice, scorched earth and violets, with a hint of tobacco, all infuse the rich blackberry fruit that lifts out of the glass. On the palate, that wine is quite expressive, offering up a panoply of darkberry fruit that is juicy and succulent, framed by super fine, powdery tannins with building intensity on the lengthy, mineral-scented finish.
