1985 Moët & Chandon "Cuvée Dom Pérignon Oenothèque" Brut Champagne (OWC)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1985 Moët & Chandon "Cuvée Dom Pérignon Oenothèque" Brut Champagne (OWC - 97VN, 94RP, 90WS) in original wood. Vinous: "I would not have thought it possible, but the 1985 Dom Pérignon Oenothèque Rosé (magnum) is even more striking than the original release. Here the extended time on the cork and magnum format seem to confer an extra degree of crystalline purity and nuance. There is plenty of depth and power, but accompanied by a sense of weightlessness that is impossible to miss. When all is said and done, the two 1985s aren’t that different from each other. Disgorged 2008. (AG)" (05/2015)

The Oenothèque series is from the wine library of Moët & Chandon, in which they age the old vintages on their own yeasts, waiting for the day that they will be disgorged and released (just like at Bollinger with their RDs). This wine is from the great '85 vintage, and it has evolved into a marvelous yeasty, rich Dom but with the wonderful fresh character of a recent disgorgement. (Gary Westby, K&L's Champagne Buyer)

Wine Advocate

Medium lemon-straw colour. Praline and toasted hazelnut aromas dominate the nose with nuances of lemon curd and butterscotch. The palate is very rich with decadently silken texture and a high level of refreshing acidity. Predominately yeasty, brioche flavours are supplemented by a subtle earthy/savoury character and some minerality. Long, mineral coated praline finish. (LPB) (03/2009)

90

Wine Spectator

A broad-shouldered bubbly, extremely rich and vinous, showing mature notes of toast and grilled nuts on a firm yet attenuating framework. Takes on an attractive oxidative note on the finish. (BS) (12/2000)
