2020 Domaine J-F Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de la Marechale"

Bid on this bottle of 2020 Domaine J-F Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de la Marechale" (93BH, 92JG, 92RP, 91VN, 90JM). Burghound: "An exceptionally pretty, indeed even perfumed, nose reflects aromas of dark currant, poached plum, newly turned earth and subtle anise hints. The refined and intense flavors possess good if not special density along with a beguiling sense of underlying tension that carries over to the dusty, youthfully austere, compact and lingering finish. This is unusually powerful, if a bit less refined, compared to its usual understated character and overall, it is really quite impressive. *Outstanding*" (01/2023)

Clos de la Maréchale is Domaine J-F Mugnier’s monopole premier cru in Nuits-Saint-Georges, a walled 9.55-hectare vineyard at the southern end of the appellation near Premeaux. The vineyard returned to Mugnier control with the 2004 vintage after a long-term lease, giving the Chambolle-based domaine its only Nuits-Saint-Georges bottling.

John Gilman

The 2020 Clos de la Maréchale is another excellent wine in the making. Like all of the 2020s chez Mugnier, the wine is ripe and powerful in personality, but with impeccable balance and lovely freshness at the same time. The bouquet delivers scents of black cherries, cassis, raw cocoa, bonfire, a touch of coffee grounds, dark soil tones, vanillin oak and a hint of balsamic tones in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and ripely tannic, with a superb core of black fruit, good soil undertow, tangy acids, fine focus and grip and a long, chewy and still quite primary finish. This is a broad-shouldered vintage of Clos de la Maréchale, but it will be a long-lived and complex wine once it has blossomed. (03/2023)

Wine Advocate

After tasting the ethereal, medium-bodied 2021, the deep, saturated hue of the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale represents quite a contrast. Exhibiting aromas of sweet cherries, berries, plums and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and supple, with sweet powdery tannins and a concentrated core of fruit. This will reward a bit of patience. (WK) 92+ (01/2023)

Vinous

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a warm bouquet. There's more red fruit here, with floral scents emerging—violet and peony—fine delineation and nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly edgier tannins, fine structure, a little more peppery in style (possibly due to the whole bunch), gentle grip, and a ferrous finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. (NM) (09/2021)

A deep rich purple. Fully extracted, very ripe fruit, hovering on the over-ripe. This is certainly voluptuous, but the alcohol does rather show through at the finish. Blackberries and boysenberries, an attractive fruit profile, even if influenced by the warmth of the sun. (09/2024)
