2016, 2017, 2018 Law "Prima" Paso Robles Mourvèdre Tasting Lot
Bid on this 3-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 2016 Law "Prima" Paso Robles Mourvèdre (95JD, 94RP, 93VN), 1-bottle of 2017 Law Estate "Prima" Paso Robles Mourvèdre (95JD, 95VN, 93RP), and 1-bottle of 2018 Law Estate "Prima" Paso Robles Mourvèdre. Of the 2016 Law "Prima" Paso Robles Mourvèdre, Jeb Dunnuck writes: "The 2016 Prima is all Mourvèdre and, like everything here, spent 22 months in barrel. It sports a seriously inky color as well as incredible notes of blackberries, blueberries, ground herbs, pepper, earth, and crushed rock. These carry over to the palate, where the wine is massively concentrated, with building, polished tannins and a big finish. It has some approachable charm today due to its wealth of fruit, but it’s in desperate need of 2-3 years of bottle age. 95+" (10/2019)

“The 2016 Prima, 100% Mourvèdre aged 22 months in 74% new French, is opaque purple-black in the glass. The nose begins with mint leaves and floral perfume, with a core of cassis, blackberry pie, blueberry and boysenberry plus accents of earth and game meat. The palate is full-bodied, dense, rich and powerful with just enough freshness, finishing long and tightly wound. This needs more time in bottle. (EB)” (02/2020)

“Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed blackberry and cherry preserve scents are complicated by vanilla and oak spice nuances. Juicy, broad and appealingly sweet, displaying sappy red and dark fruit liqueur, spicecake, mocha and violet pastille flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. Smoothly blends richness and energy and finishes extremely long and spicy, with smooth, harmonious tannins and a resonating echo of candied flowers. 74% new French oak. (JR)” (02/2020)

“All Mourvèdre brought up in 50% new oak, the 2017 Prima has a healthy ruby/purple color as well as exotic notes of Bing cherries, blueberries, new leather, pepper, and sappy green herbs. Still tight and compact on the palate, with full-bodied richness and depth, it's going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and should drink brilliantly for over a decade. 95+” (09/2020)

“Inky ruby. Deeply perfumed aromas of ripe black/blue fruits and potpourri take on a smoky mineral nuance and hints of vanilla and incense with air. Concentrated blueberry, cherry-vanilla, spice-cake and violet pastille flavors are complemented by suggestions of candied licorice and oak spices on the back half. Finishes on an alluringly sweet dark fruit preserve note, with youthfully gripping tannins and superb energy and definition. 50% new oak. (JR)” (12/2020)

“The 2017 Prima is made of 100% Mourvèdre aged 22 months in 75% new oak. It explodes from the glass with Zinfandel-like aromas of mixed berry jam, spiced peaches, dried flowers and autumn leaves. The palate is medium-bodied, silky and juicy with a kaleidoscopic array of spicy fruits and a long, perfumed finish. (EB)” (10/2020)

Jeb Dunnuck's notes on the producer: "This is one of the best lineups I’ve seen from Law Estate, and across the board, these are ripe, sexy, yet balanced wines that deliver the goods. They’re not for those looking for lightweight aromas and flavors but have incredible intensity while still showing balance, purity, and structure. Count me impressed." (9/2021)

“All Mourvèdre, the 2018 Prima offers up an incredibly complex, full-bodied, layered style as well as loads of red and black fruits, notes of bouquet garni, flowers, cured meats, and distinct minerality, a dense mid-palate, building tannins, and a rock star of a finish. As with all the 2018s here, it has that rare mix of richness and elegance and is a stunningly good wine.” (09/2021)

“Opaque violet. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, incense, vanilla and candied lavender. Appealingly sweet, incisive blueberry, cassis, vanilla, exotic spice and floral flavors spread out steadily through the back half. Smoothly blends depth and vivacity and finishes impressively long and seamless, with resonating floral and spice notes and gentle tannic grip. 78% new French oak. (JR)” (07/2022)

“Taut and lean in structure, with hints of cherry, leather and smoked pepper that finish with gutsy tannins. (TF)” (02/2022)
