1991 & 1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 1991 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (91ST) and 1-bottle of 1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (95DC, 92JG, 92WS, 91RP, 91ST). Of the 1996 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac, Decanter writes: "Deep plum in colour, holding its Pauillac character perfectly at 25 years old, opening up to show cedar, pencil shavings, tobacco, graphite, cassis and touches of raspberry purée. This is very much in the drinking window, with waves of camphor, charcoal, woodsmoke and tobacco adding complexity and interest. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. (JA)" (01/2021)

Château Lynch-Bages is one of the most celebrated estates in Pauillac, owned by the Cazes family since 1939 and renowned for producing some of Bordeaux's most consistent and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. The vineyard occupies a prime position on the gravelly rises overlooking the Gironde estuary, where deep Günzian gravel soils provide excellent drainage and create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve both concentration and finesse. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855, Lynch-Bages has long performed well beyond its ranking, combining the power and structure of Pauillac with a distinctive generosity that has earned it a devoted following among collectors worldwide.

Dark ruby-red with a garnet rim. Deep herbal nuances complement dark berry and cocoa aromas. Then rich and ripe in the mouth, with dark fruit and tar flavors offering excellent balance and a bright, lively texture. This lovely wine finishes bright and clean, with a lingering mineral note and an increasingly rich texture. (ID) (01/2012)

A difficult year due to frost, but this shows lovely tobacco and berry aromas, with hints of chocolate. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a long aftertaste of chocolate and berry. Still very good. (JS, Web-2007) (05/2012)

93 points Robert Parker for Wine Advocate: "The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity." (08/2011)

Prior to this tasting, I had never had the opportunity to taste the 1996 vintage of Lynch-Bages and I quite liked the wine, though it is still a ways away from really starting to drink well. The blossoming bouquet delivers a combination of cassis, cigar smoke, a fine base of gravelly soil tones, French roast, toasty new oak and still a dollop of fresh herb tones in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with firm, well-integrated tannins, fine focus and grip and a long, promising finish. All of the constituent components are in place here to make a fine bottle with a bit more bottle age. (Drink between 2026-2075) 92+ (10/2020)

This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant, mint and spices. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a fruit finish. Starting to drink well now. *Top 100 Wines of 1999* (JS) (11/2007)

The 1996 Lynch Bages has a delightful fresh, minty bouquet that does not quite deliver the complexity of recent vintages, nicely perfumed with hints of wilted rose petal developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, fresh from the start with blackcurrant pastilles, a touch of tobacco with a tightly coiled, minerally, slightly sharp finish that perhaps just needs a little more depth. I appreciate that lingering pencil lead note on the aftertaste, completing a solid if unspectacular Lynch Bages. It's the kind of Pauillac I would grab from a restaurant list at the right price. A point. (NM) (10/2016)

Dark ruby-red with a hint of garnet. Cabernet sauvignon-typical aromas of blackcurrant, violet, tobacco, dried herbs and minerals, complicated by a touch of smoky oak. In a distinctly firm, structured style, but with juicy acidity intensifying the dark berry and mineral flavors. Building flesh and sweetness on the back half counterbalances the wine's firm spine, spreading out nicely on the lingering finish. Though currently a little clenched and austere, this wine offers excellent precision and wonderful balance. (ID) 91+ (01/2012)
