“The Zinfandel-dominated 2019 Problem Child (78% Zinfandel, 12% Syrah, and the rest Carignan and Graciano) is more medium to full-bodied, with a pretty, elegant, graceful style as well as textbook Zinfandel notes of cigar wrapper, brambly herbs, and both red and blue fruits. “The 2020 Problem Child Zinfandel is blended with 14% Syrah and 7% Carignan. It has a medium ruby-purple color and aromas of cranberries and blueberries with touches of blood orange, violet, mushroom and aniseed. Broad and fleshy on the palate, offering intense blueberry, cassis, kirsch and candied lavender flavors and a jolt of cracked pepper that adds spicy cut. “The 2020 Problem Child is more Zinfandel-dominated and was brought up in a mix of new and neutral American oak. Perfumed red fruits, cigar tobacco, sandalwood, and dried flower notes are followed by a medium to full-bodied, round, supple, seamless 2020. The tannins here are nicely integrated, and the wine has plenty to love. The blend is 79% Zinfandel, 14% Syrah, and 7% Carignan, brought up in a mix of new and neutral American oak.” (09/2022)

“A blend of 65% Zinfandel, 14% Carignan, 12% Mourvèdre and 9% Syrah, the 2022 Problem Child opens on a more coiled, woodier note than its Zinfandel-based counterpart, the Cherry Red bottling. The palate exudes even more red-fruited lift and energy than its sibling, although with a bit less allure and grace, focused more on flashy immediacy, which delivers confidently and delectably.
