Linne Calodo, along with Saxum, may be one of the most important local wineries for the rise of “cult wine” in Paso. There was never much wine to go around, so their mailing list filled out fast. Thus, the myth was born, as so few people were able to get their hands on them. But the quality was undeniable, and so, the legend grew. Now we have the rare opportunity to actually promote their singular Problem Child. Winery notes: "70% Zinfandel, 20% Syrah, 5% Carignan, 5% Graciano. If you are looking for Zinfandel, look no further. This is one of the best examples of Zinfandel in the whole state of California. As usual, the bold audacity of Zinfandel is tamed by skillful blending with Syrah, Carignan, and Graciano. It’s like obedience school for the Problem Child, each grape helps develop the wine into a knowledgeable smart ass that will test the boundaries. The rich and bold wine elicits flavors of cranberries, raspberries, orange peel and cinnamon. There’s a wonderful mouthfeel that hints to memories of gram cracker dust, toast and blueberry jam."

“The Zinfandel-dominated 2018 Problem Child includes 20% Syrah and tiny amounts of Carignan and Graciano and spent 15 months in 25% new French and American oak. Inky colored with powerful notes of black and blue fruits, sappy herbs, smoked game, and ground pepper, it hits the palate with a lush, full-bodied, sexy texture that carries light tannins and brilliant length.” (09/2020)

“The Zinfandel-dominated 2019 Problem Child (78% Zinfandel, 12% Syrah, and the rest Carignan and Graciano) is more medium to full-bodied, with a pretty, elegant, graceful style as well as textbook Zinfandel notes of cigar wrapper, brambly herbs, and both red and blue fruits. Aged 20 months in new and used American oak, drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years or more.” (09/2021)

“The 2020 Problem Child Zinfandel is blended with 14% Syrah and 7% Carignan. It has a medium ruby-purple color and aromas of cranberries and blueberries with touches of blood orange, violet, mushroom and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate offers concentrated, perfumed fruits, grainy tannins, mouthwatering acidity and a long, layered finish. (EB)” (12/2022)

“Opaque magenta. Spice-accented black and blue fruit scents, along with building floral, vanilla, cola and exotic spice nuances. Broad and fleshy on the palate, offering intense blueberry, cassis, kirsch and candied lavender flavors and a jolt of cracked pepper that adds spicy cut. Finishes very long and smooth, with the blue fruit and floral notes repeating. Raised in a combination of new and neutral American oak barrels. (JR)” (07/2022)

“The 2020 Problem Child is more Zinfandel-dominated and was brought up in a mix of new and neutral American oak. Perfumed red fruits, cigar tobacco, sandalwood, and dried flower notes are followed by a medium to full-bodied, round, supple, seamless 2020. The tannins here are nicely integrated, and the wine has plenty to love. The blend is 79% Zinfandel, 14% Syrah, and 7% Carignan, brought up in a mix of new and neutral American oak.” (09/2022)

2022 Linne Calodo "Problem Child" Paso Robles Red Blend

Bottle Size: 750 ml
Provenance: Purchased from reputable sources and stored in the temperature controlled wine cellar of a San Francisco based collector. Pulled directly from the cellar by K&L Auctions.
Linne Calodo began in 1998 when Matt and Maureen Trevisan pushed Paso Robles toward its modern era with Rhône-variety blends rooted in the limestone soils of the Willow Creek District. Their approach centers on intentional farming, relying on dry-farming, hand work, and a “nature-positive” mindset that avoids herbicides and minimizes mechanized intervention. Production focuses on Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Zinfandel, with blends built barrel-by-barrel to capture each vintage’s character. Trevisan farms and vinifies personally, guiding fruit from estate parcels and heritage Zinfandel sites into small-lot wines that helped define the region’s rise in the early 2000s.

“A blend of 65% Zinfandel, 14% Carignan, 12% Mourvèdre and 9% Syrah, the 2022 Problem Child opens on a more coiled, woodier note than its Zinfandel-based counterpart, the Cherry Red bottling. The palate exudes even more red-fruited lift and energy than its sibling, although with a bit less allure and grace, focused more on flashy immediacy, which delivers confidently and delectably. The finish recalls the woody notes of the nose, with a grainy, angular tannin structure that merits a couple of years of aging to soften. (ML) 93+” (09/2024)
