90 points Tasting Pannel Magazine : "Cherry fruit; spicy and savory with balance and crisp style; bright and balanced." Winemaker's Notes: "Anyway you look at it, our Pinot Noir is the pinnacle of what we at Mt. Beautiful are all about. Subtlety is the secret inside this wine. It begins with sophisticated fragrances of black cherries and violets while showcasing an elegantly expressive palate of ripe bramble fruit and subtle tannins. The Pinot Noir is planted on the Southern section, which has the highest elevation in the vineyard, providing extra warmth and less exposure to frost. In addition to this our Pinot Noir is closely planted to reduce vigor resulting in lower crop levels, allowing us to ripen these grapes to achieve a true expression of this variety. Our Pinot Noir is all hand tended throughout the season and at harvest. Pair our Mt. Beautiful Pinot Noir with crispy duck, wild pork and water cress sandwiches, spring lamb, or a romantic mood."

The inviting bouquet shows red cherry, plum and violet aromas with nuances of mixed spice and almond. It is silky, rounded and flowing on the palate, and offers elegance and refinement. The wine is stylish and restrained, and finishes beautifully long and appealing. At its best: now to 2020. (12/2016)

Kupe is Escarpment's top single-vineyard Pinot Noir, drawn from the estate's home block on Te Muna Road in Martinborough. The site was planted in the late 1990s and named for the Polynesian navigator Kupe, with longtime winemaker Larry McKenna helping define the estate's Burgundy-minded approach to Pinot Noir in New Zealand.

James Suckling

Exceptionally complex, spicy and ripe, this delivers profoundly concentrated and pure black cherries with plenty of sweet spice and an ethereal, undergrowth edge. Smoothly rendered and delivered in a very deep-set, black-cherry palate. Inviting and dense, this really delivers in 2016. Superb. (09/2018)

Decanter

The Kupé vineyard was originally planted on its own roots in 1999, and is now slowly being replanted due to phylloxera - damn aphid. The 2016 season was warm and dry, producing a complex and harmonious wine here. Escarpment is known for its use of whole bunches, and this contains a whopping 70%. The wine fills the mouth with fragrances of pure damson, with spicy cinnamon and herbal elements. An abundance of resolved tannins coats the palate, melting harmoniously on the long, drawn out, tea-leaf finish. (RG) (12/2017)

Vinous

The 2016 Kupe Single Vineyard Pinot Noir has the most sophisticated bouquet from Escarpment this year, featuring very well-defined, quite mineral-driven red and black fruit that unfolds in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, touches of tobacco and undergrowth, a hint of truffle infusing the red berry fruit and a hint of black pepper that enlivens and enhances the finish. Excellent. (NM) (11/2018)
