Bid on this bottle of 1978 Paul Jaboulet Aîné "Les Cèdres" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (92JG). John Gilman: "The 1978 Châteauneuf du Pape “les Cédres” from Paul Jaboulet Aîné is a beautiful example of this vintage, which was not quite as successful in my experience in the southern half of the region as it was in the northern Rhône. The bouquet is deep, complex and fully mature, wafting from the glass in a mix of baked black raspberries, hickory smoke, garrigue, coffee, Christmas Tree spices, game and a bit of forest floor. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and absolutely à point, with a superb core, moderate soil transparency, melting tannins and really lovely length and grip on the focused and classy finish. A really superb wine. Drink between 2010-2025." (08/2013)

The 1978 vintage was exceptional in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, resulting in long-lived wine of great intensity. "This is the greatest Châteauneuf-du-Pape vintage between 1967 and 1989/1990," wrote Robert Parker in his book The Wines of the Rhone Valley. "The wines have aged at a glacial pace, and well-stored bottles remain remarkably powerful, rich, youthful wines with a vigor and intensity rarely encountered...The wines have always been very full-bodied and, when young, densely colored and tannic. The tannin has melted away, leaving a bevy of extraordinary Châteauneuf-du-Papes."
