2020 Domaine Emmanuel Rouget Chorey-les-Beaune

Bid on this bottle of 2020 Domaine Emmanuel Rouget Chorey-les-Beaune ((90-92VN), (88-90RP)). Vinous: "For me, the 2020 Chorey-lès-Beaune Village showed much more freshness and delineation compared to Rouget’s Bourgogne Rouge. Blackcurrant and raspberry scents blossom on the nose, focused with neatly integrated oak. The palate is fresh on the entry with a lovely grainy texture, plenty of black cherry fruit with a slightly piquant finish. A lovely Chorey-lès-Beaune. Wine Advocate

Exhibiting aromas of blackberries, cassis, warm spices and peonies, the 2020 Chorey-lès-Beaune Village is medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with a deep and layered core, powdery tannins and a broad finish. It's an unusually ripe, powerful rendition of the appellation. Emmanuel Rouget and his son Guillaume were once again among the later pickers in 2020, as they were in 2019, opting to wait for what they felt was full physiological maturity, irrespective of accumulating sugars. Yields were low, and some of the wines are freakishly concentrated, with several surpassing 15% alcohol, and the Echézeaux, harvested on September 3, checks in at fully 16%. Rouget himself candidly describes them as outsize and atypical, and while there are a number of lovely wines in the range, my notes reflect the fact that I found several of questionable balance. Note: Note that this will not be labeled under the name of Emmanuel Rouget but rather under both his sons' names of Guillaume Rouget and/or Nicolas Rouget; in other words, it's the same wine but it will be sold under two different, if similar, labels This is ripe still where the nose reflects notes of baked plum, cassis and black cherry jam. The lavishly rich, mouth coating and suave medium-bodied flavors possess an abundance of dry extract on the dusty, serious and firm finish. This is atypical but impressive in its fashion. (01/2022)
