2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Sauternes (375ml)

Bid on this 4-half-bottle lot of 2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Sauternes (375ml) (97CK, 96JS, 93ST, 92RP). Chris Kissack: From a 75cl format, this displays a deeply pigmented orange gold hue in the glass, clearly declaring a rich and intense concentration, but with none of the burnished development some of its peers show at this stage. Is this related to the format, I wonder? The nose is just a delight, a melange of vanilla caramel, toasted almonds, black tea leaves and grilled orange, and this is followed by a convincingly viscous start to the palate, immediately dense and richly composed. There are layers of vanilla crème caramel, apricot and bright blood orange, all backed up by a rich sweetness, plenty of firm and bitter grip, and attractive acidity... (11/2023)

96 points Robert Parker for Wine Advocate: "This superb, light to medium gold/green-hued Sauternes is a full-bodied, opulent, enormously endowed, moderately sweet offering with plenty of pineapple, peach, caramel, and smoky new oak characteristics." (06/2004)

From a 75cl format, this displays a deeply pigmented orange gold hue in the glass, clearly declaring a rich and intense concentration, but with none of the burnished development some of its peers show at this stage. Is this related to the format, I wonder? The nose is just a delight, a melange of vanilla caramel, toasted almonds, black tea leaves and grilled orange, and this is followed by a convincingly viscous start to the palate, immediately dense and richly composed. There are layers of vanilla crème caramel, apricot and bright blood orange, all backed up by a rich sweetness, plenty of firm and bitter grip, and attractive acidity. This is a brilliant package, composed, polished and dense, with deliciously bitter botrytis edges to the sweet fruit. It finishes bold, modestly high-toned and long, with shimmering grain and grip. Absolutely delicious. Drink or hold. (11/2023)

Wow. This has a seamless texture and wonderful depth of fruit with dried pineapple, pear and hints of honey. Full body, very sweet and dense. Superb. Sliced white truffles. Fantastic. (02/2014)

Int'l Wine Cellar

Pale yellow-gold. Orange peel, quince, honey and sexy oak tones of vanilla and spice. Chewy and powerful in the mouth, with highly concentrated flavors of creme caramel, honey and exotic spices. Finishes very long, honeyed and powerful, not to mention flamboyantly aromatic. (ST) (08/2004)

Wine Advocate

The 2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has a very refined, elegant bouquet that demonstates more mineralite than the previous vintages: great tension here with marmalade, quince and dried honey scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous opening. The acidity is nicely judged with touches of spice and nutmeg, although the finish is quite linear and does not quite deliver the panache of its peers. Still, this is drinking extremely well now and should continue to give pleasure over the next decade or so. (NM) (12/2014)

Jancis Robinson

Bright orange with strong barley-sugar notes but still very fresh and vital. A very promising bottle but there is no hurry to drink it. Medium weight and medium sweetness for a Sauternes. (12/2014)
