Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Pinot Noir is a jeweled ruby hue and has layered aromas of pristine cherry, cardamom, rose petal, and sweet herbs. It has incredible clarity and focus, with and a silky texture in its notes of raspberry liqueur and violets, and somehow seems to have more depth after the wine is gone. It offers fantastic balance and a sunny feel, with great refinement that lasts for ages. This wine is outstanding. Drink 2023-2032.From winemaker Michael Browne, also of CHEV and co-founder of Kosta Browne, CIRQ only produces a single Pinot Noir wine from their home in the Russian River Valley. (AF) (07/2023)

Before tasting the 2019 vintage, Michael showed me the 2021 CIRQ, and it’s evident that the 2021 release needs time to soften and integrate its structured, muscular tannins. With the 2019, these elements have begun to meld together, lengthening and allowing more of the creamy red berry fruit character to shine through, creating a creamier palate texture. The 2019 (as of August 2024) is filled with dark berry fruits, wonderful brown spices, orange peel, grapefruit zest, white pepper, tobacco leaf, and salted dark chocolate notes, with salted mineral nuances on the finish. While the 2021 offers more mid-palate structure, the 2019 is in a perfect spot. A very serious wine that requires patience. Aged for 15 months in 44% new French oak, with 16% aged in concrete and 8% whole cluster inclusion. CIRQ was founded in 2009 by Kosta Browne co-founder Michael Browne and his wife Sarah Browne, focusing on Pinot Noir from their stunning 6-hectare estate and winery in the heart of the Russian River Valley. They also make CHEV, a label introduced in 2013. The cellar features Sonoma Cast Stone and Noblot concrete eggs and tanks to enhance acidity and minerality. Michael likens winemaking to music and says, "We are blenders. We are component people." In 2024, they hired Cabell Coursey to further elevate their craft. (JC) (08/2024)

James Suckling

This has a pretty nose of red cherries, sliced oranges, button mushrooms, red plums and sweet spices. Medium to full body. It’s all about the fresh red fruit, gently interwoven with silky tannins. Crunchy for Russian River Valley. Delicious now. (01/2023)
