Nicolas Potel was a central figure in modern Burgundy whose career combined deep family roots with a distinctive négociant vision grounded in site transparency and old-vine sourcing. The son of Gérard Potel of Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, he absorbed a classical Burgundian sensibility early on, briefly stepping into responsibility at the estate after his father’s death in 1997 before launching his own project, Maison Nicolas Potel, that same year. That label quickly gained traction for its access to top growers and its restrained, terroir-forward style, though he departed in 2008 when ownership changes forced him to relinquish the name. He then built his lasting legacy through Domaine de Bellene and Maison Roche de Bellene, focusing on old vineyards, long-term grower relationships, and balanced élevage that prioritized clarity over power.
