Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of Hakushu 12 Year Old Peated Japanese Single Malt Whisky and 1-bottle of 2009 Heaven Hill 10 Year Old "Archives Whisky From The Whiskybase Team" K&L Exclusive Single Cask #496 American Whiskey. Of the Hakushu 12 Year Old Peated Japanese Single Malt Whisky, Suntory's Hakushu, known as the "forest distillery, " was built in 1973 as a sister distillery to Suntory's Yamazaki. Hakushu distillery uses different styles of oak barrel to age their single malt, but mainly hogshead, which, according to the distillery is, "suitable to the clear air and cool humid climate." The 12-year old from Hakushu is lightly peated and very delicate in its flavor profile. We've seen insane price increases over the last five years on Japanese whisky and inventory getting tighter and tighter, but for a limited time, we have Hakushu 12 in stock and available to sell, and at a fraction of the price you'll see at many other retailers across the country.

Suntory's Hakushu, known as the "forest distillery," was built in 1973 as a sister distillery to Suntory's Yamazaki (previously the only Japanese single malt available in the United States). The facility is located at a high-elevation site next to the pristine waters of the Ojira River, which are used to dilute the whisky itself. Hakushu distillery uses different styles of oak barrel to age their single malt, but mainly hogshead, which, according to the distillery is, "suitable to the clear air and cool humid climate." The 12-year old from Hakushu is lightly peated and very delicate in its flavor profile. The light and fruity style of the whisky is quite similar to the Yamazaki 12, but the smoke really makes up for any lack of richness. We've seen insane price increases over the last five years on Japanese whisky and inventory getting tighter and tighter, but for a limited time, we have Hakushu 12 in stock and available to sell, and at a fraction of the price you'll see at many other retailers across the country.

Whisky Advocate
“Fragrant and herbal aromas, with pine needles, basil, green bell pepper, pea pod, black truffle, peppercorn, and smoke from smoldering dry mosses and wood shavings. It’s very smooth and refreshing, with pear, peppermint, lemon, lime, green tea, kiwi, and herbal notes, finishing with chopped mint, more herbal layers, and gentle peppery spice. A unique composition and a quintessential Japanese whisky experience. (JM, Summer-2023)” (04/2024)

The wonderful whiskies coming from the WhiskyBase team are finally available in the US and K&L is the exclusive retailer for the brand throughout California. One of the oddities of the Scottish whisky industry has been the release of several American whiskies from Bourbon mashbills aged partially in Europe. These weird wonderful whiskies have been released by famous names like Cadenhead's and The Boutique-y Whiskey Company, but we've rarely seen these unusual products imported back into the US. Now, thanks to our relationship with the wonderful team being Archives, we've secured one of just a handful of these excellent Heaven Hill barrels that have made their way back into the US. There are huge differences in maturation between Scotland and Kentucky, but there's still something inherently bourbon-y about this special spirit. This whisky spent six years in Kentucky in used cooperage before making the journey to Scotland four 4 more years. The aromatics still rest resoundingly in the sweet orchard fruit and vanilla, but instead of caramel and spice, it's ripe, fresh fruit. Instead of Pungent and smoky, the vanilla is subtle and floral. Behind the pretty aromatics are powerful exotic flavors. At an impressive 133.2 proof you’d expect the heat to be overwhelming without the sweetness of new oak, but this remains surprisingly supple and drinkable. We do recommend a splash of water and while it’s provenance is unusual, it remains a distinctly American spirit unlike any other.
